I noticed that the new xbox skin pack promotional image depicted characters with extra geometry like antlers and hats. I'm sure that isn't in the game, but it gave me an idea. Since Minecraft likes voxels so much, why not have characters be voxel based? This would not affect gameplay at all but would merely be cosmetic. In a character editor, a player would start with the basic human model and add/remove pixel-sized blocks and color each face. There would have to be a building limit, something like a "skeleton" of immutable blocks inside and and a limited number of blocks one can build away from the center. Each body part would be editable and would still use the same animation system. Since the hat layer would be useless, a voxel based hat could be added optionally for hair, antlers, ears, headcrabs, or, I dont know...maybe hats?
Pros:
~It would open a whole new world of customization possibilities and still sticks to Minecraft's visual style.
~Minecraft would have to have an in-game character editor, which would be easier.
Cons:
~More GPU usage.
~Larger files than skin images.
Complete support. I love this idea, and it would allow for a lot more customability with skins and I would love it for my own skin. This could also be combined with the independently textured arms suggestion
I would like to see this done, but I must say it likely won't be. Not to mention the possibility of some pretty obscene things being brought to life in full voxel 3D.
I don't understand what you are trying to get to. Extra geometry is already in the game, except only for certain people. Deadmau5 has mouse ears, which make use of the space in between the top/bottom head faces and the top/bottom hat faces. That counts as a hat/extra geometry, doesn't it? The special capes people get count as extra geometry.
I mean completely re-doing the skin system. Old skins would need to be converted, but would still work. Think like a giant statue of your skin, and you can place additional blocks on the exterior and break ones out. Like what some people did in YouAreMinecraft:
Honestly, I would like this but limited to the head area only. We do not want uh obscene objects.
This.

My main problem is joining a server and seeing half the kids walking around with penises attached to the front of their skins because they are being 'funny'

The problem with the truth, is that it never lies.

I like the headgears and body things...
What if you were wearing armor with bits coming out of your skin, wouldn't they awkwardly jut out of the armor?
