I'm entirely new to this forum, but this idea struck me recently and it's been pulling at my mind ever since. I'd love to provide specifics but this is all I have. I searched for any related ideas and I found none at all.
Dream Realms
What if there was some sort of tragic or heartwarming random event that our Survivor character witnessed that causes them to be plagued by a Nightmare or blessed by a Dream? It would be some sort of temporary coma induced by sleep that sends the player into another realm, I.E., a Dream Realm.
Let's say a zombie is seen chasing a villager (Probably a few chunks away from a village) and the villager is changed into a zombie, or simply killed. Seems normal though, right? What if you add dramatic music and the fact that you can't save the villager? Well, that seems a bit psychologically haunting to a younger child, but let's take into consideration our audience is usually eleven years and older.
Either way, if the player were to go to sleep soon after this "Nightmare Effect" they would enter the realm of nightmares. This nightmare realm would be inhabited by either
a.) Copied events of whatever just happened to the player (The player seeing some or many scenes of zombies attacking helpless villagers), and the player being forced to defeat these zombies one at a time
b.) or simply a new type of realm environment, in this case, permanent night. The player would need to fight off mobs in search of "the bed" which would take them back to the native Overworld.
This all seems pointless, but consider some sort of incentive or reward for all of this. After all, it would be somewhat optional to you to begin with. But if the player completes this nightmare scenario --I.E. defeating the zombies attacking the villagers, or defeating enough mobs--, they'd be given a buff of some sort for a given amount of time depending on the difficulty of the nightmare, or maybe an item reward. Seems nice, right?
Now that we've discussed Nightmares, let's move on to Dreams. I'm not entirely sure how a random event could seem "heartwarming", but let's imagine we're happily travelling up a river and we see an adult villager or an Iron Golem rescue a baby villager from a river. I suppose there could be better examples, but let's use that. This event would give the player the same effect as the "Nightmare Effect" but of course would be described as a "Dream Effect" or something or other. When the player would slip into sleep, I'm guessing this would bring them to a realm with different functioning. This "Dream Realm" would be composed of either
a.) Just a bright-coloured, peaceful environment that's always timed at the sun's height, most likely a plains environment or a large farm surrounded by a forest that you may or may not be able to enter.
b.) An overall peaceful field full of flowers, plants, animals, and a few trees. Just as option a., the time would always be at noon and it would be very bright and comfortable looking.
The overlying difference between the two realms would be that the Dream Realm can be exited willingly without anything or anyone stopping you, but for the "bonus effect" of the Dream Realm to be given to you, you would need to spend a certain amount of time inside of it (Most likely 5 minutes or so, nothing extremely long).
Finally, we've talked about Nightmares and Dreams, but what about how they manifest themselves in the actual OverworldRealm? I'd venture to say that maybe after a certain number of repetitive good or bad events (which the occurrence of these would be completely out of the users control), certain things from the Dream or NightmareRealm might seep into the Overworld.
If the player receives Psychological Hauntings from repetitive Nightmares, they may have hallucinations of something like a creeper or zombie if they walk around at night with no light. Maybe the player would turn around and there would be an imaginary creeper staring them right in the eyes, which would scare a lot of people to bits.
Now, if the player receives Psychological Delusions from repetitive Dreams (these aren't good either) they would imagine some things too good to be true. Maybe mining at height level 30 and seeing a diamond ore, but it would turn out just to be coal, or maybe subtle things like walking through a large barren desert and imagining water and wheat (such as an imaginary oasis) which would turn out to be cactus and lava.
Of course, these are extremely unrefined, but they all have advantages and disadvantages to the player. They're also completely avoidable.
At that, I bid my idea to the judgment of my peers.
Actually there were quite more spread out than I expected, most were under the "sky realm" type label. But I do strictly recall seeing nightmares before, I'm sure of it. Your idea is a bit more overly complicated than the others, but still the same suggestion of a "peaceful dream world" type place.
I've seen stuff like "Dream realm" where you have something like teleporting to a Dimension through sleep, but my idea is something targeted more towards a horror aspect, which I think Minecraft is supposed to be a survival-horror game.

I'm not sure you know what a horror game is...because Minecraft is not one of them.
I'm not sure you know what a horror game is...because Minecraft is not one of them.
No way? But if you haven't done your research it was originally supposed to be a survival horror game based on a few other games which I really don't care to look up because I'm lazy.
But by "survival horror" I don't mean horror as in something like Dead Space and the lot, but I'm referring to the fact it's supposed to be remotely spooky, just as how the idea I proposed isn't teeth-clicking and spine-shiveringly scary. Take into consideration the iconic creeper. People fear creepers sneaking up on them. It's scary to some people. I'd rather not turn this into a debate over what genre Minecraft is.
So the fact of the matter is I believe it may enrich the gaming environment for some people who would like more depth into the "scary" parts of the game (Yes, I do know that Minecraft could only truly be scary to the most fearful of five-year-olds, but still.)
I merely want people's opinion if they think it would be good or bad for gameplay.

Minecraft is only scary until you know what you are doing. Then it is just another day in your world, no matter how many Zombies or Creepers or Endermen you are killing.
But beyond that (and I agree, let's not make this a discussion on Minecraft's genre), I do not like the idea. For one, it would be exceptionally hard to code. Dream sequences with static triggers are one thing, but with the tons of different aspects that it would take to get where you want it it would be amazingly hard.
For example, your "seeing a Villager get turned/killed" sequence. First things first, I have never, EVER, seen a villager get killed or attacked by a Zombie, and that is playing on Hard/Hardcore. But beyond that, if one were to die, the game would need to detect that, detect if the player was in an appropriate radius at that time (because you are usually not aware of things more than 3-4 chunks in any direction, less depending on terrain), and if you were actually looking in the first place. Not only does that mean detecting if the player was within X blocks and the camera was facing the Villager, but it also needs to detect if you actually had a Line of Sight. That is not easy to code in itself.
Furthermore, you are forgetting one thing that makes a big difference. Most players do not care if a Villager is killed. If this was implemented, I personally would try and save Villagers from this (even though as I said, never once has a Villager died in my presence), just so I didn't have to deal with some nightmare thing when I didn't actually care about the Villager in the first place. It basically shoves your idea of right and wrong or scary, or whatever down other people's throats when most don't care in the first place.
Oh, and while I have never witnessed a Villager get killed, I have forced them to die before by locking them out of a Village where they can be killed. If I had a full Village and didn't have the time or resources to expand it, but it was full of Farmers and I wanted other things, I would get them in a Minecart, and shove them to the nearby Zombie dungeon or just anywhere far away from the Village so they wouldn't be a problem. I love making and protecting Villages, but if one of them is not useful to me, they are gone (preferably in a way that doesn't hurt my reputation with them).
Then there is the good dream sequence. Unlike the first situation you gave, where it could happen but I haven't seen it, your example here is downright impossible. Rivers don't have currents, Villagers don't drown, and Iron Golems only save them from Zombies. It helps if you give a situation that is actually possible to see.
From there, these Dream Sequences would be the same situation as triggers for Nightmares. Shoving the stereotypical "Peaceful" place down our throats isn't fair to those who don't share that idea of peaceful. I personally enjoy going out at night and fighting mobs. It's fun and relaxing. Why isn't my ideal "Happy Place" represented? What about those who love mining or building or Redstone?
I also don't care for the needing to stay in for 5 minutes to get a buff. Find some kind of timer online, set it for 10 seconds, and close your eyes and do nothing. It will take a while. I don't want to have to sit there for 5 minutes and basically AFK for a small buff. And because the buff wouldn't be worth it to me, I would find getting forced out of my normal routine to be put in a dream that I am going to just exit out of right away annoying.
Finally, the hauntings and delusions. One of your triggers (although just an example) is hard to achieve unless you are extremely careless or make it happen yourself. The other is strictly impossible. But you say after several of these occurrences. It would be extremely hard to make that happen. You also say that this would be entirely outside of player control. I don't mean to sound rude but...
Screw. Everything. About. That.
The BEST thing about Minecraft is I can control almost all aspects of gameplay. Don't like Villages? Turn them off. Don't want a particular village? Raze it to the ground. Hell, I can keep hostile mobs from spawning if I have enough Torches. I can control everything with enough effort. So many parts of other games are outside the player's control, and while those games may be awesome, we have all had a point where we played a game and asked, "Why did I HAVE to do that?" But that is getting off topic.
Back to these delusions, they would just be annoying and waste time and effort. And I don't know about you, but I don't start seeing things after several good or bad dreams. That takes an extreme level of crazy. I use the default Steve skin, not one in a straight jacket.
Beyond that, let's go to the technical aspect of this. This would require a ton more code, and would be challenging in SMP. There would have to be several Dream Realms made at any time on any server just in case someone slips into a Dream. It provides a ton of other technical problems for tiny benefits.
So as you probably guessed, I'm saying no thanks. The maximum extent I would like to see of dreams or nightmares is a slight chance (2-5%) upon sleeping that you have a dream or nightmare, and it gives you a simple text message ("You had great dreams last night and feel well rested", etc.) and a buff or debuff for that day, depending on whether it was a dream or nightmare. Maybe your hunger drains faster with a Nightmare, or you get a temporary Health Regeneration for a good dream. But that is it. We really don't need any more realms anyways.

If I am not mistaken, the Mojang team mentioned something like this, where you would first accidentally access it during a dream, then later be able to do so purposley. It would be their alternative to an aether.
This is however much better. I like the nightmare side to it. It could maybe change up a little, but I do not really have any major suggestions.
How to make people take you seriously: Step 1: Intersperse colour throughout the post at complete random. Bonus points if they're especially hard on the eyes, like Cyan Yellow, or white.
I guess I have to be constructive, it's not the worst idea on these forums, but it just seems pointlessly overcomplicated. When I go to bed in Minecraft, I just want hostile mobs to go away, not be taken to some magical realm where I can't do anything until it spits me out. If I could go there willingly and there was stuff to do as opposed to just an over-world clone I would like it. Say I could craft a dream catcher and if I'm holding it while I'm sleeping I can go to a magical realm (that actually has something to offer) before I go out via portal. If your suggestion was true, then my Minecraft experience would consist of:
"Just look down, don't look at anything. Don't want any nightmares to waste precious time. Oh crap I fell into lava because I couldn't see where I was going!
Or:
"Oh no, it's almost nighttime. lets kill a pig or two so I can have some tasty pork chops before I go to sleep. Delicious! Now time to hit the hay. What? I'm in a Nightmare, what traumatized me? The pigs!? That pig had a family, and I have to save it by killing the murderer, which is me. So I can either be trapped her forever, or effectively lobotomize myself by killing my subconscious. This sucks!
Or:
"I accidently looked at a zombie killing a villager because I have eyes, and now I'm going to have a nightmare that I can't prevent. Looks like I'm staying in a hole for seven minutes tonight."
No support. Sorry if I got the idea wrong, but the color is all over the place, and I can't do anything more than skim it before my eyes will just skip over to the next pretty color.

I do agree with pretty much all aspects of this. In a nutshell, I think hallucinations completely out, weird circumstances that cause this stuff totally out and if you want the other realms make it a random occurance while sleeping. Have it be a random chance that it would happen at all and if it does happen, make it a random chance for to be either dream or nightmare. in the aspect of multiplayer servers, just have the dream world and the nightmare world be there own universe like the nether and have multiple people be able to join each one. you don't need to generate another dream/nightmare world for each person. If you really want the surroundings to be different for each player just change the spawn point of the world for each player, that way each player spawns in a different place in the world and is therefore place in different surroundings.
I don't have the time to reply in any detail at all but let me make the point that the colouring is not RANDOM, it's to denote different extremes. Unless for some reason your eyes don't process medium-toned colours, you shouldn't have a problem. I'll come back to this later with an entire reply towards all of you I suppose.
