When I was in a pyromaniac mood to see the recent fire spreading updates, it occurred to me that I should be able to get charcoal from burning the wood blocks on the tree. So...
Add a charred wood block that is affected by gravity. When you chop it up with an axe, it will give said charcoal.
Another idea, could make a less durable version of the flint and steel, a flint and stone (made from flint and cobble) to help with getting charcoal. (Some people just want to watch the world burn, I know!)
I actually think this is mostly good except the flint and stone. Sounds more like a griefer want because there is no need for an early source of fire unless you need to burn some guy's house down. (By the time of nether portals you already have diamond tools thus iron)

I would love it if you checked out my "about me" page on my profile and looked at my threads I'm always happy to see new posters.
If this were added, they would need to make it a relatively low chance for the wood to turn to charcoal, otherwise we wouldn't be able to clear out forests/jungles with a good ol' forest fire. Having every log turn into charcoal that easily would also make it way too easy to get huge amounts of fuel. Why should I bother going underground and looking for coal when this jungle tree could just as easily be a quick stack of the stuff?
No support.
1. Easy fuel and makes the game too easy
2. In order to get charcoal, you have to heat wood in a place where oxygen is absent, or else the wood will burn due to the fact fire needs oxygen.
Though if the charred wood only existed in the nether and can be picked up in anyway, support for aesthetics (in spooky houses)

Let me see... Fire does not spread much.
