Hey everyone! I don't know if anybody suggested this already, but here it is! My idea is a new item for Minecraft, a key. Now what a key would do is when you craft it, the first wooden door you left click with the key in hand would be assigned to that key. Which means only that key can lock and unlock that door. When you left click the door for the first time a UI thing will pop up in which you name that key, examples would be like "Front Door Key" or "Back Door Key" or anything you want to name it. Now to lock and unlock doors you need to have the key in your hand and left click a wooden door again after you've named the key. When you do this a message will pop up saying "Door Locked" or " Door Unlocked" When a door is locked it cannot be opened nor destroyed well it can be destroyed, but only by TNT, Creepers, or Fire. When a door is unlocked you can open it obviously and destroy it with anything. The crafting recipe for the key could be just 3 golden ingots diagonally on the Crating Table. Also there could be different types of keys such as a Regular Key and a Master Key. Master Key can open every door. Oh yeah the keys are for only Wooden Doors not iron. Well that's my idea! Tell me what you guys think! Hopefully somebody will take this into consideration.
P.S. These would be great for Custom Maps/Adventure Maps!
Or otherwise you can have a vault block as mentioned in my thread. It can be connected to a door by placing it next to it. The vault block can show a GUI that you can set a 4-digit number inside by right-clicking it. It will be indestructible, and there will be a ''self-destruct'' button in the vault block's GUI but you need to type in your code and the vault block will become a floating small icon, waiting to be picked up.
It would be great for servers. And when other players try to remove the door connected to the vault block or type in the wrong code at least 3 times, it will send a message to the player (like a death message), informing of a attempted break in. The vault block can also be connected by redstone to pistons, etc.

I like your idea! But I would like keys to they would be awesome for Adventure Maps!

Thank you. =) I don't receive much positive comments for my ideas often.
Maybe you can put keys into the vault block and type in the code and the key would have the code ''installed'' into it. So you can just put the key into the vault to unlock the door and collect it back on the other side of the vault block once you entered your house or safe or whatever. Saves the hassle of typing the code whenever you want to enter.
However if you lose your key you can just type in the code in the vault block to unlock it. The vault block accepts both code and key.

Okay then, I guess I was not considering about others because for me obsidian is easy to come by. How about 3 iron ingots arranged in a straight line for a key?
I already mentioned how to create a key and a lock for adventure mode: Use tools.
Blocks now break with their corresponding tools in adventure mode. Basically, take a pickaxe, let's say of wood tier, with 1 use durability; this is your "bronze" key, capable of opening a "bronze" lock of stone. A "silver" key would be a stone pickaxe, it opens a "silver" lock made of iron ore, and so on and so forth. With the anvil renaming tools, this gets even better as you can name the item "silver key" and "gold key", ect. Using a texture pack is recommended, but not required.
I'd upload a video of me demonstrating this technique, but it's not on my current computer. Basically, I built a series of 5 areas using this method. The first was a simply built door, made out of sand, not the best and certainly not digital diamond worthy, but the player basically had to "find" the lock (which was underground, in a real adventure map this lock may be further hidden behind traps), and break it to open the door (dropping the sand into a pit so the player can walk across. The second was similar: a "hidden" (it was only a proof of concept) lock that, when broken, dropped the "drawbridge" of anvils by simply moving a series of pistons. The third was a trap/treasure scenario: there were four locks, one I never finished working on, one that opened the door (simple redstone leading to a door), a third giving a hidden prize, and a fourth that triggered a suffocation trap. Finally, I developed a "treasure" key, a gold axe that broke a log hanging over a chest after the player exited the fourth room, this can be used as a "hidden" item for gaining extra loot in an adventure map level, like a bonus prize for one of those flash games and such.

Edit: Here is the thread on which I first mentioned it: http://www.minecraft...nture-gamemode/
Other than that, I have to simply say to use the search bar. Beyond adventure maps, keys hold no real use, even in SMP, not that much.
