Hello, everybody. I've been a reader of these forums for a fairly long time, but just today decided to make an account so I could post my own suggestions. I play on XBox 360, and first got the game for the Survival mode... as such, I have a bias towards survival-related features rather than just pure building.
I decided to name this thread "Minecraft II" because I have a bunch of ideas that would overhaul different aspects of the game (agriculture, transportation, mining, terrain, villages...), but rather than make a million different threads and spam the section, I'm consolidating them into one for your benefit.
BASIC SURVIVAL Adding States
At the moment, we have Health and Hunger. I consider the system to be fairly brilliant... I would probably have made Hunger a limit on maximum Health instead, but this works quite fine too. There's more changes that could be made, though, to make the game more challenging and "survival"-focused. If you prefer, this could be part of a new gamemode called Survival, and the old gamemode would be named Classic.
The first addition I would make would be a Thirst bar. This has been suggested by somebody else (sorry, don't remember the thread) as a Nether feature... great idea, but I think it could work just as well in the Overworld. Thirst wouldn't have to be much more intrusive than Hunger. How I would rearrange it is...
Health = When it hits zero, you die.
Hunger = Acts as a limit on Maximum Energy.
Thirst = Acts as a limit on Maximum Health.
Energy = Used for movement.
See? I never liked the idea of eating to regain Health, so I would add some sort of medicine for Health, which could be brewed from flowers and the like. This is a good thing for the game, as it gives flowers an extra purpose besides being a dye. Hunger would be regained, of course, through eating foods, Thirst through drinking beverages, and Energy through eating/drinking certain recipes but primarily sleeping.
You can't just go running around eating raw porkchops and drinking dirty water, though. We already have food poisoning in the game, so dirty water would have pretty much the same effect. You would have to boil it to sterilize it, or just drink something else.
More Tools, More Crafting
When I first played the demo, it felt epic scurrying to get my base started with night quickly falling. The actual game, though, starts you off in the morning (rather than noon), giving you plenty of time to prepare the absolute minimum necessary for survival.
That's okay. But when I can get an entire, if ugly, house built before nightfall of the first day, "survival" isn't really that hard.
As much as "punching trees" is part of Minecraft's legacy, I would change it so that it's like Hatchet, where the player starts with the clothes on his back and a few useful tools, most likely a pocketknife, a hatchet, and rope. "Punching trees" wouldn't be possible anymore. The hatchet would be used for cutting wood to make a few crappy tools (like the wooden tools we already have). Digging would be possible by hand, but it would be slow and annoying until you make a shovel. Rather than having to get Flint and Steel to start fires, Flint and Steel would just be an early, effective way to do it... you'd start off by collecting sticks and scraping them. Without a pickax, you gather stones, craft some sort of chipping block (?), and then use that as your "crafting table" for sharpening stones. Then you make early stone tools (a tier between the current stone tools and earlier ones). Killing anything with your bare hands would be quite an achievement, so using a Sharpened Stone would be necessary for hunting, and still difficult.
One of the good things about Survival mode is going from bare hands to having a full set of tools necessary for survival, so I approve of adding more tools. These would include things like Hammers... it takes time to mine a block, so placing a block should take time too. Then, there can be different types of "crafting blocks"... the Crafting Table (with pretty much the same recipe as already exists) would be for tool-making, the Furnace for refining raw materials. How about a Cooking Pot for food? There's a lot that can be done with that.
"RECIPES" AND OTHER CRAFTING Clothing Skins are ugly. I don't have any skin packs, but really... "Tennis Steve"? But the other day, I had a thought that could either make wools more useful, or allow for a new Cotton plant... Clothing!
From the Crafting Table, you would take various materials (primarily Cotton and different dyes) and make clothing sets, and these sets would give you bonuses... the Miner Set, for example, might increase the yield from mining blocks, the Cowboy Set could increase the amount of Beef and Leather you get from a cow, etcetera. This could possibly be done just by having another equipment slot, and then being able to wear armor over it. Clothing wears out over time, though, so it would have to be replaced.
Food Of course, there's a million different foods that could be added to the game, which would open up even more recipes. I'll list these, but later.
Medicines There can be two roles to medicine, restoring Health and curing "diseases". Different colored flowers and new herbs could be brewed in a Cauldron to produce medicines (or potions, if you prefer to call it that). I'm thinking that there should be just plain old Medicine that slowly increases Health, some sort of energy drink that boosts Energy at the expense of Health, a thing for curing poisoning (let Milk be for Thirst), and so on. Diseases would be neat, like how they were in Skyrim, but I don't have any particular ideas for those. Just that they would either directly harm your Health or have a penalty.

Wishlists aren't really allowed. Users are encouraged to separate their ideas - we've found it makes for better and more well-thought out suggestions if people don't shove them all into one topic.

I like some of the ideas, but I also think if they DID update the game and added these features, it just would not be minecraft anymore, if you know what I mean.
