Have you always wanted to keep a base extremely hidden and no one else can possibly find it? Here's some ideas on how that can be improved.
TORCH LEVER
The torch lever is crafted with one lever, and one torch. The torch lever can only be placed on walls. When right clicked on, it leans downwards, and outputs a redstone signal. When clicked again, it switches back to normal. The only different thing in it's appearence is that it's light level is eleven, while the normal torch is fourteen, giving a small clue, since it is cheap.
BOOKSHELF LEVER
When you craft a bookshelf with a lever and redstone dust (shapeless), it will give a bookshelf lever. It is just like a bookshelf, but when right clicked, you will "pull" a book out of it, making the shelf give a redstone signal. This can be hidden well if used right.
KEY PRESSURE PLATE
Crafting two nether brick side by side will give you a key pressure plate (needs better name). It won't activate when you step on it. The point of this pressure plate is that it only activates when a certain item is thrown on it. When you throw the first item on it, it will make a very high pitched click sound, to let you know the item is confirmed. Pick it up, and you're done. Throwing any other item besides the first one will press down the pressure plate, but not give a signal. This can be mostly used in adventure maps though, because people can simply break the block. But when broken, it drops nothing.
I like the bookshelf one, but not so much the other two, mostly because they sound too easy to make (mostly for the torch lever), and it would be really.... weird, I guess.
why not make a redstone bookcase and a redstone book? when you right click the redstone book onto the redstone bookcase, it becomes a block, acts and looks like a button, and protrudes from the wall.

Then it isn't secret.

I have discovered a truly remarkable proof of this, which this margin is too small to contain.

I would love to have classically "secret" switches like these. Something to consider about the last one: I've heard, but don't quote me, that the allocator coming 1.5 might have an item filter of some kind implemented into it. If this is true, you could create detectors for specific items with a small bit of logic. It wouldn't be as compact, but it has a lot more applications.
I like the torch and bookshelf ideas. I don't really care about the key pressure plate, but it's doesn't matter to me.
I'd also like to add another option: Hidden pressure plates. I'd like the ability to put pressure plates in more places without people see them for cosmetic purposes. Of course, it would be helpful for traps and hidden bases as well.
Perhaps the recipe could be two glass blocks (just like normal wood or stone pressure plates). Obviously the invisible pressure plate would still occupy a space and could be found by someone hovering over the location.

Retired StaffBookshelf lever - brilliant, easily your best one.
Key pressure plate - don't like it so much, seems hard to code, and what if you lost the item?
All in all, suppport, except for key pressure plate.

but it is disguised.
