So, this idea just came to me as I was adding flowers to my home:
What if we had the ability to make the red and yellow flower blocks show not just 1 flower, but 2 flowers depending on how many times you clicked a flower into place, onto a dirt block? The reason why we can't have 3 or more, is because the space is limited and Mojang need to make separate objects for each configuration, like this:
1 red flower object
1 double red flower
1 yellow flower
1 double yellow flower
1 red and yellow flower
1 yellow and red (inverted) flower
Maybe even 3-4 flowers would be possible, if it was restricted to only a single color of flowers per dirt block. 4 flowers would have to be smaller though, to fit onto a single block. But anyways, the list above is just 4 new objects to the world, each with their own on-hit trigger (they produce the flowers that they show, so a red and yellow flowerbed will produce a red and yellow flower to pick up, when hit).
(Alternately, whenever you punch a flowerbed that has 2+ flowers, it could instead "downgrade" to -1 flower and that flower would pop out of the ground.)
--------------------
Method:
Click on the dirt with a flower -> place that flower
Click on the dirt with a second flower -> "upgrade" the flower to a double flowerbed, so to speak.
--------------------
I think, aesthetically, this new feature would yield a ton of great new looks for homes and whatnot. I think it's a good idea, mostly because it shouldn't require too much work to pull through. If it needed more work, then it's natural that Mojang would spend that energy elsewhere. But if it's just a minor tweak, then why not?
Eh, support. Maybe double flower-pots too, which can be crafted as 2 regular pots together and it lets you have a nice 2-combined pot to hold 2 different plants?

I think that could be done similarly simple as well. I like it, although it's two different things for two different types of aesthetics. I do think flower pots have a more limited, specific use and what I would love to see is huge flowerbeds that look and feel crowded like the various flowerbeds one sees IRL. But if you combine that with flowerpots, I think we'll be seeing a lot of great builds from people using them in intuitive ways.

Cheers.
May the force be without you.
