I was watching the video from Minecon 2012 yesterday where the Mojang team was outlining what would be in 1.5. A lot of the ideas sounded cool, especially what could potentially be coming out of minecarts. Now, during the Q & A time, there were two questions that were asked (and I'm paraphrasing):
"Will lapis be more useful?" and
"Could you make a sort of compass that shows how deep you are?" (Yes, the debug screen was brought up, but Mojang said it might be possible for those who don't want to "cheat".)
Taking inspiration from those questions, here's what I am suggesting:
Yes, make a crafting recipe for something like that. It could be something like a piece of redstone (a fair addition to the Redstone Update) and some lapis (just to make it practical, unless that's too "farfetched"), or another material. Or, take an existing compass and just add other materials to it in a crafting grid in order to create it.
What do you think?
EDIT: unlike the current compass and the clock, I would want something like this to work in the Nether. Actually, Mojang wants to encourage traveling to the Nether, and they've considered putting more ores in the Nether to do that... why not be able to craft this item with a Nether ore? Just a thought.
I was thinking, perhaps you combine lapis and redstone to make something like bluestone? And it does the exact same as redstone, but you would be able to run 2 wires alongside eachother that don't connect
I like the idea! It would make for some more compact wiring.
I don't quite either; I think it's handy. Do I use it? No. Do I plan to use it? Yes. I think it was Mojang that used that terminology (Jeb or Dinnerbone specifically)... but anyway.
Been suggested a hundred times before, but I'd still want it. Mainly because I'd take note of what layer I'm in so I know where diamonds do and don't generate. So yeah, support.

It should be make by the dust/ingot of the ore along with lapis, making like the crafting recipe of compasses/clocks.
That's pretty close to what I was thinking!

Otherwise, Altimeter? Sure, why not.
Thank you for your support, and for letting me know about the title. (I didn't know the appropriate word!) Title updated.
EDIT: Thanks to all of you who have supported this idea so far. I hope that Mojang sees this...
Does Mojang read these?

Dinnerbone does, occasionally. I think they mostly look on reddit, though.
Alright. Thank you!
Thanks!
