So my suggestion is simply a new gamemode, called MobMode
When you start a new world in MobMode, you will see a window with:

Mob: (selection box)
Players: (yes/no)
(Yes=players walk around, mining, building and such, your goal is to kill them. No=No other players)
Done (button)
"
This window is viewable by hitting * (changeable in controls)
If you hit * in a world without mobmode, nothing will happen.
And if you are a creeper, you can blow up, then you respawn.
a spider can climb walls.
A skeleton spawns with a bow enchanted in infinite I, and a arrow. Burns in daylight
A zombie walks with hands out. Burns in daylight
Enderman Dies in fire and water. Can build, but can only pick up 1 block at a time
