You know, our characters do you have two hands. Two. I know with the current item selection system, this is kind of impossible, but hear the idea out. Your character can have his/her sword equipped, along with a shield, torches, food, potions, etc. One semi-simple way this could happen is by reserving the first two slots in the players bottom inventory (where you can scroll through the different equippable items) reserved for a player's left and right hands. The first slot (left hand) will must be switched by point-clicking, but the second slot (right hand) will act as normal (you can still use the scroll wheel to switch what you're holding).
To use/place/eat the off-hand item, just right-click. If you're facing a bed, chest, or furnace, the default is still going to be to activate that block, but otherwise your off-hand item will be activated. You can raise your shield to block an arrow or eat an apple.

Well then how would you look around? You have to move your cursor to switch your left hand, AND look around? Really? NO SUPPORT
I like it... if your off hand is empty then u use sword to block if not then shield,
but I would rather make the off hand act as an extra 'armor" slot and thus make it a passive kinda thing, cause people don't want extra control mechanics it seems.
Wouldn't this break items such as swords being used to block and attack? Therefore, wouldn't the only items that can be used in both hands be pointless since the tools you use will need 2 hands to use.
Honestly.. What the heck does blocking even let you do? I've tried it, and it makes little to no difference. It's really pointless.

What he meant by that is that you'd have to open your inventory and manually drop the items into the box in order to select the item for your left hand. Jeez.
Honestly, this would be a pretty nice idea. Blocking is basically pointless for swords, and few other items actually use the right click.
A suggestion to your suggestion, if I may.
The right hand be for main items, like swords, axes, stuff like that.
And the left hand be for items that can be placed and edibles. Bread, blocks, torches, doors, wool, things like that. And an easier selection system would be TWO quick select bars. The top one would be for your left hand with all of your items that could be placed. These would be selected with the number keys. The bottom one would be much smaller. Three or four boxes, maybe five. These could be selected and scrolled through with the mouse wheel for your weapons and tools.
This would make getting torches, food and supplies much easier, while still being able to use your weapons.
I do also suggest only being able to use one thing at a time. Like, stop chopping trees to much on a chunk of bread, then continued chopping, or stopping to toss/drink a potion in combat.
Not really actually. I just tried out the difference in Skeleton attacks on hard mode.
Without armor it takes out a heart and a half from an arrow without blocking. With blocking, it takes out a full heart.
So.. it blocks a heart from arrow hits?
And with iron armor, it literally does nothing. Seriously. I just tested this on Minecraft. You're way off. And how is holding a sword in front of you supposed to protect you from a Creeper explosion?
