At the moment, swimming works on the premise of auto-sink. So the player automatically sinks and has to continuously press [Space] to rise. This brings many problems: it makes it bothersome to swim across large bodies of water. It prevents you from chatting in SMP.
Let's say that in water, the player automatically floats. You press [Shift] to dive, you press [Space] to rise. This solves all of those issues, as well as making swimming easier overall.
As an extra feature, if the player is wearing metal armour, he auto-sinks. That would both satisfy those who prefer auto-sink, and make it more balanced. (perhaps we can discuss this in the thread).
I don't like the auto sinking in armor thing. It seems like a pointless minor difference that would cause more of a headache than any kind of satisfaction for the sake of "realism". The rest I like.
That being said, why don't we just have directional swimming like... almost every other first person game that allows you to swim? You can still have the Space and Shift buttons for sinking and rising, but I'd much prefer looking down, holding W, and swimming in the direction I am looking, rather than having to slowly sink down like some kind of rock.

so you can somehow remain neutrally boyant with 100 tons of stone in your inventory ????
And it is impossible to float without constantly kicking your legs with nothing in your inventory?

What are your thoughts?
That brings up having to compensate for the armor, as well, since it already sinks. Guess you would dive faster with it on.
I'm also known as TANNAR in some places.
