My suggestion is that there needs to be a little more variety in the weapons for minecraft. It should stick with the general type of weapons that minecraft already has, essentially medieval, but should expand a bit.
Bows: Bows generally are well balanced weapons, but they have no differences except perhaps enchantments. Two new options that could be implemented are recurve bows and longbows. Both would look different from the regular bows. The recurve could be slightly more powerful or faster with the draw while the longbow could have much better accuracy at long range.
Swords: Swords have more variety in terms of material, but not in type. Again two new types could be greatswords and sabers. The greatsword could be slower and stronger with a larger reach while the sabers could have some other different properties.
Axes: It seems to me that axes are not really used much in minecraft fighting. To change that, axes specific to fighting could be added. The only new type I can think of for an war axe though is possibly a double-sided axe. It could have stats similar to those of the normal swords or maybe be slightly more powerful but slower.
Others: Other suggestions for new weapons would be just to add a few new types. Perhaps crossbows, maces, or spears. The crossbow would be a fun counterpart to the normal bow. Maces would be an interesting new melee type of weapon, and spears are good because of their versatile nature. They could be designed to be both melee and ranged weapons depending on whether the player left or right clicks.
My thought is that since minecraft is a survival game, why not provide a few extra means for surviving in a fight?
No.
This is why;
Minecraft is a building/mining sandbox game (hence the name.)
Whilst adding more weapons sounds great, think about it this way; We have swords for melee, bows for ranged, armour for protection, flint and steels/buckets of lava for "special". Now think about mining; We have picks and TNT. Digging: Shovels and TNT. Woodcutting: Axes.
Every aspect of the game has a few ways to do it; combat has more than most.
PVP will not be fixed by new weapons; pvp will be fixed by a new pvp system. We don't need hundreds of new weapons and stuff; the game is simple enough how it is.
I know that this game is a building/mining sandbox game, but one could also consider it a survival game. It doesn't have to be so, but I figure many people could agree with that since the primary game mode is "survival mode." In my own experience, probably 80-90% of my time on there is spent gathering resources or constructing new and extraordinary things, but every once in awhile you just need a break to get away from the usual. Usually, I'll either spend that time exploring or killing mobs at night. It gets rather frustrating, though, not having any variety in how that's done. I don't ever use axes, the swords at least have some differences, but not much, and let's face it, the bow is rather simplistic. For someone who enjoys ranged combat over melee, that gets especially frustrating. I just feel as though it would add a nice touch to both the adventure and survival game modes.

The bow we have now is fine, and the two other types of bows you mentioned don't seem to have downsides, making them overpowered. The normal bow does enough damage, because you can arrow spam mobs from afar without them even knowing where you are.

So, if both the greatsword and saber are just as equally balanced as the normal sword, then what's the point of even adding new swords? Why not just stick with the normal sword? You're basically adding new swords with little mechanic and aesthetic tweaks just for the sake of adding them, and that's not the worth the time to program them in the game.

Uhhh no, axes aren't used much in fighting because their ideal use is for wood..? Axes are only useful in fighting if you broke your sword and the axe is the next best thing you have. All your doing now is proving my points. Why bother adding a war axe if it's the same as the sword? You'd just be adding an extra sprite to the game. "More powerful but slower" is uncreative and doesn't add anything special.

That doesn't provide anything new. Your ideas are basically those "less x but more y" ideas. We already have all we need to defend ourselves, so adding some new sprites that are copies of existing weapons but with minor tweaks are just wastes of time. No support.
