I was inspired by little video of a patched glitch exploit to make this suggestion: eye scanners!
Note: This may have been suggested already, but I had no idea what to enter into the search.
First of all, they'd be crafted like this:
or perhaps like this:
(I stink at custom texture making.)
The Iron is the casing, the Spider Eye or Eye of Ender symbolizes the eye-scanning part, and the Pressure Plate is because it emits power under similar conditions to a Pressure Plate. The Redstone is for... duh.
They would have the Iron Block texture on all sides, except for one. This side would appear as a dark monitor. A texture overlay (perhaps a particle) of a green scanner line would go over the screen part as the player looks at it if it's within reaching distance.
The scanner side would always face the player, similar to Pistons, and could be on any side, including the top or bottom. It would emit a Redstone signal for as long as the player looks at it on any side. (The any-side-activates-it allows for hidden Scanners in a wall of Iron!)
Now, this would only function as a cool but unnecessary way to open a door or something. Now comes... passeyes? ("Passeyes" work in SP and MP since SP can be opened to LAN.)
If one is placed without doing anything, then any player who looks at it can power it. But right-clicking on it will open a GUI with two text fields. One will say "Whitelist" before it, and the other will say "Blacklist" before it. Only the player who initially placed it (or an op or LAN world owner) can change the fields.
The Whitelist field allows you to type in a list of players who can look at it to power it. For example:
Roadsguy
That would allow only me to use it. But what if I want to allow more than one to use it? This works like superflat preset variables, or like Command Block variables:
Roadsguy,N00bsalot,PPie84
This would allow me and the (as far as I know) nonexistent N00bsalot and PPie84 to use it.
But what if we want certain people to not use it, but anyone else to be able to? The second field, the Blacklist, would prohibit certain people from using it. It works just like the Whitelist. It's even possible to blacklist yourself!
If one field is typed into, the other is grayed out and won't be able to be typed into until the other field's text is removed. This way, you can't have a logic paradox by having some in the blacklist and others in the whitelist, or the same players in both!
Any op on the server, or owner of the world if opened to LAN, would be able to unconditionally power one of these, even if they're blacklisted.
Now, how would this be coded to power when you look at it? As seen in the video linked to at the top, an old now-patched bug allowed Shot Arrows, Pistons, and Pressure Plates to interact differently if you look at an extended Sticky Piston. The bug is fixed, but the effects can certainly be redone intentionally for this if it was shown possible before.
Now, why use this for locking when you can just use a combination lock and give people the code rather than put them in this block? Combination locks are big, and hard to build if you don't know what you're doing. They also take a lot of resources. This takes a lot of Iron (maybe just Ingots instead of Blocks though), but Iron is pretty easy to get early on in the game, and is easy to get a lot of in one mining trip. As for the Blacklist, it's pretty much impossible to lock certain people out with a combo lock, while letting everyone else in. You'd need to personally give everyone the combination!
Note: See the poll's second options about the crafting recipe, including Spider Eyes vs. Eyes of Ender, Iron Ingots vs. Blocks, and combos of the two options.
Wow, you sure did a good job explaining this. Iron blocks should be used, as this will have it be less OP. Full Support. EDIT: Ingots would be better actually.
I suppose that Ingots do make more sense (see the poll), and I was going to update the images anyway with the Pressure Plate variants swapping like on the wiki, so yeah.
Not a half bad idea, but I agree that they are fairly expensive.
Also, having a white list and a blacklist at the same time is kind of pointless. If someone is not on the Whitelist, they cannot get in. If they are are on the Blacklist, they can't get in. I know that they each have their own uses (Whitelist is good for when you only want to allow a small amount of people, and a Blacklist is good if you only want to block a small amount of people). I suggest changing it so there is only one list of people, and you can press a button on the GUI to toggle between a Whitelist or Blacklist. That would make it a bit easier and the block wouldn't need to check a second list every time you try and add a new player to it.

Alright, I usually find about 15-20 iron in my first Minecraft week, so I might be wrong.
Well, this isn't exactly for people early-on. It's more mid-game, like Iron Tools, and of course Redstone in general, like Sticky Pistons. And in multiplayer, by the time you have enough stuff to make a decent door lock anyway, you should have enough Iron for this.

I honestly think this is a good idea, but it does not fit in with the "feel" of minecraft. This would be much better suited to one of the many defense mods, or maybe industrial craft. Support for the idea, not the Place.

True, it is a bit more "tech-y" than the rest of Minecraft. Maybe make it out of Smooth Stone and/or Cobble?
The GUI option sounds good.
