This thread is unique in many ways. It contains both a suggestion to both Mojang and the Forum, and is also the first thread of the brancher variety. You're probably asking, "What's a brancher?" Well, that's part of the suggestion to the Forum.
Forums Suggestion: Branching Topics (Branchers)
My idea for the Forum is a new type of topic, Branching, or a Brancher. A Brancher topic is a topic that's main suggestion is mainly used as a part suggestions. Basically, some ideas are bad on their own, but when combined with other ideas, they become bearable. But sometimes, these idea's are big enough for their own topics, and combining them into 1 topic turns people away earning the dreaded response, TL:DR. Words really don't do this justice, so look at my example below if you don't understand.
Hopefully, the forum will add official support for branchers, maybe with something similar to the Video Replies? But until then, I've found a workaround. As you can see, this topic is prefixed with Brancher: Gearbox. To add a branch to this topic, simply tag your topic with Brancher: Gearbox. To see all the branches of the topic, just click the tag.
Minecraft Suggestion: Gearboxes
This suggestion is mostly in relation to the Redstone Update, and I suspect it will have many branches.
One problem that I run into sometimes with my suggestions, it that my idea isn't bad, there's just not a good crafting recipe for it. There are materials that could fit its rarity, but they don't make a good recipe. I sense that this will be a big issue for the Redstone Update, since I find its most common in machines. My solution is the Gearbox.
The Gearbox is much like the Machine Blocks and Circuits of Tekkit. It's a block that is crafted specifically to be crafted into other machines. It might be crafted thus:
This kills 2 birds with 1 stone, giving a legitimate use to Lapis, the Nether Star, and Gold.
As for its use on it's own, I think that it could work as a control box for Redstone circuits. Right clicking it brings up a GUI with 8 levers and 8 buttons, each labeled 1-8. It might transmit wirelessly to receivers 1-8 with a range of 32 blocks in any direction. Clicking lever 8 would turn receiver 8 on, and clicking again turns it off. Buttons work in much the same way, but they only pulse.
The other big part of this receivers. They are crafted like this.
They are like repeaters, but instead of stone, they're gold and the torch is blue tinted and stays in the middle. Right clicking on it brings up the options for it. You can change the frequency from 1 to 8, to correspond to the gearbox. It powers all redstone directly next to it, and can be locked on or off much like a repeater can.
Now comes your turn. If your machine needs a better recipe or needs to be more expensive, add this to the recipe and branch back to this topic. Tell me what you think of the Gearbox, and what you'd like to change. If you like one of these ideas, leave a +1. If you like all of them, make an alt and +1 with that too! And say what you think of Branchers, and whether you think you're likely to use them.
How about no. The nether-star is way too end game for something as...well, useless as this. Sure, its wireless redstone, but only to 32 blocks. I also dislike the overuse of gold. And I'm sure you know about gears. They were in the game in indev and were meant to be used like redstone, but notch removed them because he knew people would want to use them as a sub-part to EVERYTHING.
Erm. I like both suggestions. But we would need a really good reason to use this for a machine of sorts. It would have to, like, locate ore or something. Or grant access to flight and teleportation. Or maybe even generate diamonds or emeralds.
But I do indeed like your suggestion. Maybe tweak it a bit, and loosen up on the use of gold.

Here's 32 blocks in any direction.
Still think it's too small? I don't intend for this to be used to control things halfway across the map, I intend for this to be a compact alternative to a wall of levers and buttons. The Nether star looks like a gear, it seems like a transmitter, you only need one per machine and it gives a reason to defeat the wither. Gold is also useless, you come up with something better. Are you sure that's why they were removed. Because according to the wiki, the gears purpose and why they were removed were never known. http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Gears
Also, you've said nothing about the branching suggestion idea. And as with the Nether Stars topic, you've completely missed the point. The main use of the block is to be used in crafting recipes, for suggestions that don't exist yet and you therefore can't judge.

That's the beauty of the branching topic. If you think it should do that, make a branch. I might get rid of a little gold, but it still needs a use.

Do you have a link to that? I explained the thing about the gearbox.

Thanks, but this won't be to useful as wireless redstone in its current form. What would you think of increasing the range with a lapis array?
is your sig supposed to be a link?
A beacon's width is a little small, don't you think?
Thanks! Maybe you could use it for those piston robots from your siggy. What do you think of branching topics?
Probably. Why don't you discuss the topic?
