A simple upgrade would vastly improve the minecraft method of getting you and your stuff from point A to point B: tying things together-tethering.
With the fishing rod if one could cast on one item then on another to bind them together, movement of goods would be much easier. Minecarts tethered would become a train. Boats tethered would become the easiest version of more modular boats. Pigs tethered would become a caravan. To undo the tethers, just snip it with shears.
With minecarts this is useful. With boats and pigs, one upgrade is needed: storage. Saddle+chest=saddle bag. Boat+chest=storage boat.
Minecarts could move in the obvious linear fashion. Boats could become bound in a grid system then all move with each other. Pigs would just follow in each others footsteps.
That's the whole idea.
------------
To expand slightly upon that, resulting in this rider styled addendum so that I don't make some topic for ideas related to this but not important enough to stand on there own:
wool blocks broken down to string, allowing an more ready supply for tethering
minecart+boat=iron boat, doesn't break...this is so damn annoying
craftable saddles, yeah maybe annoying that it cheapens saddles, but I got over clay and cocoa being more common
boat+furnace=...boat with furnace, steve may find it difficult to paddle a barge
pig+furnace=mechpig...just kidding. but that would be funny
lead ropes for other livestock, pig with saddle tethered to a cow tethered to a cow to be able to lead cattle to a new pasture elsewhere, put livestock in boats like with minecarts
Tethering to fence posts would allow pigs, caravans, boats, and barges to be tied up.
Finally, make pigs not jump with steve and cargo anymore, make people have to build roadways or at the very least fix it so pigs no longer jump up stairs and half blocks resulting in terrible animation and poor behavior. Or just let steve control the jump with a space bar, not the pig.
In their "Future of Minecraft" speech at Minecon this year, Jeb (and Dinnerbone, I think) talked about how they saw how many mods used pipes and such to transport items, and will be implementing a version of it in Vanilla, namely new Storage Minecart features, along with linking together carts properly. There's that.
Second, wool to string has been requested a lot. I have a feeling we won't see that happen at least not for a while.
Third, don't expect a crafting recipe for saddles ever.
I won't add a recipe for saddles. I like the idea of them being rare & keeping dungeon loot semi-useful. In fact, we need more dungeon loot!
You should rename the thread. There is no such thing as "thethers".
I was wondering about that too
Who is the lead dev? Is it Dinnerbone? I thought it was Jeb.
50% of the main game devs say no crafting recipe. Jeb isn't a dictator. Jeb hasn't said anything on it. Fair enough to say that as it stands right now, no one should hold their breath for a craftable saddle. That said, go ahead if you feel like it

1. I think that was just a typo, but it should be edited.
2. It is Jeb, but it makes sense for saddles to be loot-only items. Jeb probably agrees with/respects and understands Dinnerbone's point anyway.

It is jeb.
That still doesn't change the likelihood of something being added because jeb himself didn't say it would.
There are quite a few flaws in the idea, but I wont point them out because I'm tired.
So, to be brief, clean it up a bit, there are many problems.
[quote=Badgerz]You have to keep in mind that people are stupid.
[quote=Catelite]Just because you don't understand how something works, doesn't make it broken or pointless. >_<

Yeah, Minecart linking will be added in 1.5, but boat tethers and maybe pig wagons would be nice.
Support.
