I'm going to assume you're talking about an option to restrict a world to a specific size, such as the Xbox version. I don't see a point in that though, how would it help anyone? You have the option of staying in one spot and not traveling anywhere.
For lower-end computers it could help with speed issues as the map size would be smaller and not generating chunks after a while. Also for people that get lost often as there is no chance of wandering a random direction forever. So there are a few advantages to this, and there are mods that do this already. However, after a while the map would become unplayable as there would be a limited amount of resources. So yeah, it has ups and downs.

There is a world maker for MC single player named WorldPainter, it's awesome in my views because you get to decide wether or not you want the world to be small or large, and also being able to change the surface of the world to whatever you want, even beds! But hey, I made a world of diamond blocks and it all went well for me And the world exported from the client is put into your MC world save folder so you can load it as much as you want.

Because some of us older people miss the days of being stuck on a woodsy island in the middle of an infinite ocean instead of some massive continent that's too big to feel homey.
