I feel the boats in minecraft are very useless at the moment, but they have the potential to be fun, and a decent mode of transportation. Discussion from yourself can help this suggestion become considered and soon we can have decent boats, capable of better speed, and of course, handling.
Speed - While the boats in Minecraft do amount to a decent speed after awhile, I feel the boats are in need of faster acceleration.
Durability - Im not 100% sure if it has been done already, but boats should not break from being on open water, I can see the balance and realism of crashing into the shore; but if boats handled better, the durability would not be as much of an issue.
Handling - The boats definetly need tighter handling in my opinion, they need to turn better to navigate narrow rivers.
Different Types of Boats - Birch boats, jungle wood boats, oak boats, and pine boats should all be added to Minecraft, each carrying different traits.
Oak - Standard
Birch - Lightweight, greater speed
Jungle - Crafted better, greater handling
Pine - Tough pine wood, most durable.
This idea is... actually not that bad. Relatively simple, makes use of different wood types, and each has their own uses and advantages. It also isn't the typical over the top "Boat with chest and engine and compartments for your friends and a cannon too!" boat suggestions you usually see.
That being said, I think the regular boat should remain exactly how it is. It is the "standard" boat as you said. I suggest the stats be something like this (note that the is just a representation of how good it would be compared to other stats and other boats and doesn't represent any tangible number):
Oak
Speed (both acelleration and top speed affected by this)
Handling
Durability
Birch
Speed
Handling
Durability
Jungle
Speed
Handling
Durability
Pine
Speed
Handling
Durability
This way I could choose the boat for any situation. I can use a Birch boat to sail the ocean to my island, a Jungle boat to navigate twisting and turning rivers, and a Pine boat for Swamps and rough terrain.

I like this more than the huge mega-boat suggestions out there, mostly because of its simplicity. While I did support the other suggestions mostly because boats are in need of an overhaul, seafaring is not really a major part of minecraft, and it should stay that way. This makes it so boats are more versatile and fit your needs without making it overly complex with giant ships and laggy entities. Nice job.
However, 80% more boats? Really?

It might be worth noting that pine isn't all that durable. There is a reason softwood is called softwood.
I like this idea very much. I use boats a lot and they're all right, but I think they need a lot more improvement and these suggestions are well thought out.
As you can see, the Birch does make sense. It is light so it has to have better speed. Though it should also have better control but less health.
Pine Redwood is thin in real life but Burch is thicker so how about in the game, it has slightly less sped and control than the Birch but has more health?
How about Oaks having the regular boats but with better health than Pine
And for Jungles...They could become 2x2 trees, thus becoming the thickest trees in game. How about they have the worst (Though not so low compared to Oak) speed and control however their health is high as well?
You fool! This is only 75% more boats! I HAAAATE THIIIIIS IDEEEAAAAA--
It's actually pretty good. I'd definitely make use of this (but i'd shudder to see what Terrafirmacraft would have to make of it... good god, that's a lot of boats).

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
