Think about it, Mojang has a large player-base with people willing to pay to set up servers.
This being said, if there was an extra 5 cents to the price of minecraft, multiplied by all the people who play it, thats a good amount of dough already. Then if Mojang sold optional capes or ranks for a few dollars each, then the charity will really go somewhere, while allowing people to opt out of donating.
The ranks would work by the amount donated on minecraft.net
Wooden Rank- Donate 5.00
Stone rank- Donate $10.00
Iron Rank- Donate $20.00
Gold Rank- Donate $40.00
Diamond Rank- Donate $50.00
The rank would have a small symbol (Wooden pick for wood rank, stone pick for stone rank, etc.) next to the player name on servers, showing that they donated.
The cape part is sort of self explanatory but, for $1.99, players could pick from a few pre-made capes
and for $5.99 they could make one of their own.
Finally there would be a “Donate Anonymously” button where users could choose any amount to donate just out of the goodness of their heart.
(for all of the people who don’t use the U.S. dollar, google “currency converter”)
You must be thinking “wow, theres no way anyone will donate 50 bucks for a little symbol”, but you are underestimating Mine-hards (Minecraft + Die hard). Even if most people don’t donate, there will still be many who will and besides, What does mojang have to lose?

Don’t quote me. And Don’t quote me on not wanting to be quoted either.
I was actually thinking how cheap the capes were. People will pay obscene amounts for a cape or even a little symbol.
I would say $100 for the smallest symbol and $1000 for the cape, otherwise everyone will get one and they wont be exclusive,
But personally I don't like the idea of paid capes, as it again separates the people with money and those without.
You make no sense. In one post you say people should pay even more money than the current amounts suggested by the OP and then say you are against the idea because it separates people based on who has money and who doesn't. You can't have both.
I like the idea. It would be hard for them to set up, but vanity items such as capes, hats, and the like would sell well and a huge amount of money would be able to go to the sale, since all it would take to enable these things is an extra line in their servers for each player saying "DonateCape = True" for each item.
Edit: Bouncing back to my reply to the person I quoted, why in the world would you want exclusivity in something that you only get by donating to charity? "People should be able to help a good cause, but only if they can give a lot of money."

I think that while it a good idea to support world wide charities, I dislike the feel that this would add. I don't know if anyone here ever played any of the multitude of "Pay for Membership" RPGs, games, or other things out on the internet, but it really sucks when you start adding pricing. People begin to automatically dislike each other because "I'm richer than you so I bought something I don't need". I think that you should just tag on a little bit to each time you buy minecraft. A donate button would be available at any time, but purchases of the game would give a bit to charity instead of making it a reward system.
