I think that adding obsidian tools would help save diamonds for more important blocks, weapons, and armor.
Benefits: the tools would have (maybe, add suggestions) 2250 uses. Equivilient of diamond tools in terms of mining ( able to mine everything a diamond tool can)
Downsides: You can only craft obsidian pickaxes, shovels, axes, and hoes. Obsidian tools cannot be enchanted. To craft one you have a 3:1( 9 obsidian+6sticks=1 pickaxe) or 5:1(15obsidian+10 sticks=1 pickaxe) ratio.
Hopefully this will be balanced enough to be put into minecraft.
There are roughly 3 diamonds per chunk on levels 2-15. This means out of the 3328 possible Diamond Ore in any given chunk (13 levels, and each chunk is 16x16 so 16*16*13), only about 3 will be Diamonds. Lava covers about 8% of the horizontal area of the Overworld between levels 1 and 10. That means that there is an average of about 20 Lava per chunk. But the average lava pool is 2 blocks deep, so that makes it about 40 Lava per chunk. Even at a 5:1 ratio, You can make 2.66 Obsidian Pickaxes for each Diamond Pickaxe for each chunk you mine. Those 2 picks are worth 4500 uses. That lasts almost as long as a Diamond Pick with Unbreaking 3, but without having to spend any levels on Enchanting.
I haven't even taken the Nether into account yet. Approximately 70% of the Nether floor is Lava, usually over 4 blocks deep. That's a lot of Obsidian, and all you need is a bucket.

What if they only had 900 uses and had a 5:1 ratio? Would it still be too unbalanced? (Not enough time for me to figure out right now)
And i intended this to be a way to conserve diamonds for armor and swords.
Obsidian tools is part of the top 5 most suggested things ever, right up there with Herobrine and sheep dropping food. Someone from Mojang stated that no new tools will be added.

Then it doesn't have a point of being added at all. There are plenty of Diamonds in any MC world, I have tons sitting in chests, as well as several Diamond tools, and at least six Diamond picks

But you can take the lava out of the nether with a bucket then convert it to obsidian, which is what he is talking about. The Nether is a virtually unlimited supply of easy-to-find lava, and therefore obsidian.
Obsidian tools are just unecessary and serve no purpose. Even if they were balanced, which these still aren't, there would still be no point adding them to the game.

- Still not balanced. Here is why:

Pretty sure you can't place water in the Nether.
But you can take the lava out of the nether with a bucket then convert it to obsidian, which is what he is talking about. The Nether is a virtually unlimited supply of easy-to-find lava, and therefore obsidian.

Stack of empty buckets + Nether = Infinite obsidian.
Also, this idea is oversuggested and extremely redundant.
