I don't think we should change the sticks recipe, it's sort of iconic.
I used to think that too, but then I needed the mental space for more recipes. But I'm not married to a diagonal sticks recipe either.
I was trying to brainstorm alternative ways to make woodchips.
One possibility would be to have planks disintegrate into woodchips when mined with anything but an axe. That's counterintuitive though, because if you were going to pick a tool that's good for making woodchips, it'd be an axe.
Another way I thought of was to place your axe in your crafting area along with the wood to be chipped, and then the recipe gives you your axe back. It could work, but there's not a lot of precedent for that sort of thing in Minecraft.
And then there's the possibility of a woodchipper block, basically like a furnace, but for grinding. I think Industrial Craft has something like this. Personally, that's too complex for me. I think the basic woodchips block has a more vanilla feel to it.
I also thought about making woodchips by re-combining buttons. You know, like a big pile of wooden buttons. Could work.

I think you are going to love my Survival Let's Play series on YouTube! It's called Spaceboot1's Garden. I make pretty things.
It's too late now for this video, but I will try to work on that in the future.

Re-Combining buttons seems decent.
