Well, I didn't get any search results for this considering I don't quite know what to call it, but an addition I think would be great for minecraft would be to add time tags.
They would be associated with anything that takes time to process stuff: furnaces, crops, and possibly even redstone circuitry, though I think that would be exploitable.
Now, if you didn't know, when chunks unload all stuff going on stops and is preserved. a furnace smelting 54 stone will still be smelting 54 stone when you load that chunk up again, quite annoying for anyone that may run a large furnace load (especially if they added my furnace queues!) or leave a bunch of crops behind should they go off exploring/ log off in multiplayer cases.
So, for these said blocks (I'm sure there are a couple more time sensitive blocks), I suggest a time tag be added to all unloaded chunks, and ONLY when a chunk unloads. When the chunk is loaded again, all blocks with a time tag will execute the amount of ticks between the time tag for the newly loaded chunk and the current (Minecraft time) time. This would solve time sensitive things not doing their stuff without having to keep the chunks loaded. When I say minecraft time, that means you're can't save and exit/ turn off the server then expect things to have happened to your world.
I'm not entirely sure if this would be laggy still or not, but I'd like to see Mojang do it if they haven't already unless it would be laggy for sure.
Blocks that use a time tag: grass, mycelium, and dirt (Grass spreading), saplings, mushrooms, water in ice biomes, ALL crops (cocoa, wheat, melon, potato, carrot, cactus, sugar cane, warts), fire, vines, mob spawning, jukeboxes, snow fall, water and lava for moving, and farmland (for saturation). As I had said redstone could potentially be fixed with this, but I think it'd be way too laggy and exploitable (run clock, go away, come back).
Thanks for reading, more insight would be appreciated
Well, I can definitely see the appeal with furnaces, crops, and saplings. But the rest just seems kind of... minute compared to the amount of lag it would generate.

Maybe so, I don't think they should actually have time tags apply to all of them, but definitely the furnaces and crops. Now that I think about it, water and lava should definitely not be applied XD
