I noticed that when many players (unless in a pvp greifing allowed server) come across an NPC village, they tend to trade with the villagers and perhaps even farm them. Right now, there is no incentive for players to kill
villagers, unless they have bad trades or for population control. Thus, villagers will never "hate" the player unless he kills iron golems, because players wont attack villagers.
In my opinion, there needs to be some incentive for players to kill villagers. I was thinking perhaps villagers could drop two or three emeralds each time one is killed.
There are downsides to this. For example, what reason would one have to kill villagers even then, if they can just farm villagers and trade with them for emeralds much more efficiently? I used to think that emeralds were a valuble oddity, but now it seems they are useless, because so many people just farm villagers.
It would still be helpful in adventure maps. Players could then kill the villagers to trade with other ones.
I am into basic game design, by the way. I realize that adding this is as basic as a mod, so I'm not saying I'll die if it doesnt get added to regular minecraft.
Just make it a rare drop that's twice as rare as a normal rare drop? (1/80 chance for an Emerald from a Villager) That'll both give a reason to kill them but make it hard to farm them.
Emeralds are already renewable, anyways.
