In Minecon 2012, Dinnerbone said he is thinking about adding more functionality to PvP, so we don't have to stick with that click-click-click thing.
So my proposition is to work the battle more strategically by adding an "special" bar, like the traditional fighting games, where you fill this bar to be able to hit your opponent with some special attack.
The special attack should be determined by something you craft and wear and has a durability. Very simple.
Five options to seed the discussion:
1. Jump boost and wall climbing.
2. Temporary Stun attack.
3. Creeper-like explosion radius (off course you don't die).
4. Hostile Mob invocation.
5. Fireball (Hadouken baby!).
The special bar, traditionally fills by getting hit/angry and empties with each use.
And.... are you sure this isn't too op? We don't need more bars, we have four of them! And for 1. there's a mod for that.
3, 4, and 5, are kinda op, on 4, what if you spawn a creeper?

This signature has absolutely no point at all. And then it has a point to inform you that it has no point, but it has no point because it really doesn't have a point, but it has a point because it tells you it has no point... and ah, screw this.
They are planning to, but now isnt the right time. 1.5 will be a redstone update. Not a Combat Update. Lets just wait for Mojang deciding when to give combat an overhaul

Actually, the Air Meter applies to combat that involves underwater action. (Either Pvp or Wither fight as some mobs dont actually go underwater and killing squids are NOT combat as they dont fight back)

though the idea of a special bar is interesting.. maybe a rage bar? when it fills up the player attacks much faster / deals more damage.
but then again.. not everyone plays PVP.

Yeah, a rage bar is exactly what I mean. But just attacking faster or with more damage is just more clicking and will not add any strategy to the fight.

Don't you want another bar ? The "anger/rage bar" is just a concept, it can be implemented in other ways as well. You can make the player flash in red, the hunger bar flash or shake or anything else that is not a bar so you don't fill the screen with more indicators.

The suggestions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 are just suggestions to seed further ideas. And no, I don't want to use mods for playing. I could, but I really like vanilla. The thing I really love about Minecraft is that it's always updating so the community get a chance to contribute with ideas to add to the game.
I also don't think those temp buffs are to op, if you think so, haste II + Efficiency V is very op, regen is op, but they are either temporary buffs or are restricted and I think the "anger" attack could be like that too. You need to be low on health and with accumulated anger to use and with an special crafted item to use it, so it's really optional to use the rage attack if you are not happy with it :-D
