Minecraft needs more mobs. I think it's simple. We did just get some new ones and I think that's delightful! However, there's lots of room to add more!
Why's this? Why bother?
Hostile Mobs add a certain element to minecraft that makes it unique. When night falls, some people run for shelter. Some descend underground, some get out there and fight. These hostile mobs have a large effect on what happens, they make the game fun! I don't really need to explain. Creepers, Zombies, you know.
However as I've worked on my adventure course, over the months - I've found the current set of mobs to be too limiting. Yes, we have stuff like Spoutcraft but this isn't too accessible and flexible for everybody. I think we can make the scary creatures that lurk in the dark a little more.. scary!
So, I've decided to present some new ones. You may like some, you may hate them all and that's okay! I'm very open to constructive criticism and my aim here really, is to work on ideas with the community and even if all of mine are terrible, we can work on something together and come up with brilliant ideas!
Here we go! (remember you can suggest changes to anything you see, make some fixes!
I'd like to note that these would be classed as RARE mobs. They are useful for player creations/uses and can appear on a map if they are enabled in the creation stage of a map, OR in the server config for servers. When enabled, they will not COMMONLY appear.
SandStalker A horrific mummified entity that stalks the desert night with a savage urge to feed on the flesh of unsuspecting travelers. They move quite slowly and may not seem to pose much of a threat, but they deal severe damage if you let them close in. If that doesn't worry you, they have the ability to burrow or ascend from sand. If you have a makeshift desert home with a decent radius of loose sand flooring, they may come out of the sand and interrupt your sleep in a cruel manner.
Habitat: Desert Biomes
Aggressive: Yes
Technical: - Spawns as a model-free entity within sand blocks, only at night - May only crawl out of sand if surface is at least 2x2 radius of sand, and player in range - Burrows when aggressive state is lost - Are NOT common entities and will not bother desert villages/villagers - For presentation, will have a burrowing animation when noclipping through sand. - Will appear in Pyramids/Desert Temples
Spectre A dark, opaque, dangerous being found in really high places. Spectres share the void's particle effect along with a creepy see-through shaded appearance. They have no faces and do not walk, but merely glide around motionless. Spectres are very dangerous entities and have a singularity ability. They do not attack, but will begin to charge energy and draw people towards them, until they emit a shockwave that sends people launching away. People must push against the current when a Spectre charges, or they may find themselves being blasted off cliffs/skyscrapers etc.
Habitat: Night Sky
Aggressive: When Approached
Technical: - Spawns in open areas above 110 blocks - Singularity is avoidable by killing the spectre in time or pushing out of the current - Being blasted by the shockwave deals damage if player hits a wall - I acknowledge that the singularity is an annoying gimmick, I am willing to remove it and add a black-hole looking projectile attack that has a debuff perhaps
Forest Demon If people thought ninja creepers hiding behind trees were to be worried about, then floating demon heads that glide through forests at night should be truly feared! They look like a dark, scary version of this (Head of a chinese dragon) and are summoned to haunt the forest at night, cursing any tresspassers they find with their lethal projectiles and will lure mobs to their position.
Habitat: Any Forest Biomes
Aggressive: Yes
Technical: - Act as sentinels and debuffers, launch orbs of smoke that slow or weaken players - Draw surrounding mobs to their position after 5 seconds of aggressive state - Creepy sound-effect for when Forest Demon is alerted by player - Consistently faces player with large glaring eyes - Jerky, loud death sequence that leaves a temp. light source that wards mobs off
I will add drop list and more monsters tomorrow, I have a whole list of ideas! Please instead of saying "NO", suggest ways of improving these ideas (or changing them completely).
We don't really need new mobs with gimmicks to passively exist on minecraft because they're intrusive/annyoing to encounter and get in the way - but they are perfect for players or servers that want to create a creepier/more dangerous experience at times. It's for creative reasons and enhanced combat gameplay.
This sounds like the stuff that would give new players a heart attack.
I'm not really 'all for it', but I do like the first mob idea. That would certainly make desert biomes a bit more... interesting. I'd like to add on a suggestion to that too: A slightly increased spawn rate around Desert Temples and Pyramids.

You read my mind! I wanted to add that they'd spawn around those, since they're pretty much devoid of any mobs - but I thought another mob on my list would have fit the spot. However I think you're right and I'll add that into the technical detail thanks!!
I like all the ideas, what are the health and strength of the mobs?
aw thanks! I added a list of some of the new ones to come soon as well. I decided it might be too cluttery to add the hp, damage and/or drops of mobs for now and I want to know what you guys think. I can safely say Sandstalkers would deal a heap of damage, and that the other two of the current ideas would be easy to kill because of their abilities. I'm thinking sandstalkers should be able to take a few hits, as a hulking slow mummified creature.
Well, I agree minecraft needs more hostile mobs, but these don't really fit the feel...
However these would be quite nice for them to start appearing after you kill a wither or something of the sort
I actually do agree with you to an extent. It's pretty tricky at this point to add new hostile mobs that have a gimmick to them without them seeming a little off. The best thing would be to mould these ideas into something really minecraft-esque. It's very easy to do so, bit by bit with suggestions, as a community we can shape really great ideas. Alone, it's difficult and raw ideas don't sit well at all!
I think your idea is spectacular also, almost like an increase in difficulty, once the players have overcome something as powerful as the wither. Maybe they get a message (in singleplayer) saying something about how new foes have begun to roam the map. This would be daunting to people who don't know what they are and it would invigorate them because it's a surprise and they won't know what to expect at night.
It's exciting that way! Especially if the mobs are rare, maybe even their drops can be sought after. Dangerous foes with dangerous loot!
This stuff sounds terrifying o.o But at the same time super cool It would be cool if you drew what the mobs would look like and posted pictures.
I'm glad you think they're okay!
If I could draw, I definitely would. Actually, I'm gonna ask someone if they can sketch these ideas for me. They look pretty scary and they would fit the minecraft art-style, still.
I really want the forest demon to look like a super scary version of that image. Doesn't have to look like a dragon but something that looks like it's staring into your soul, something that'll make people want to run away!
The rest of the monsters on the list I'll do when I get back later.
Some brief examples:
- Vine Hellions are humanoid in shape and are camoflauged, they roam the jungle. Let's just say you don't want to accidentally climb on them or bump into them. You might get a little...tangled..
- Rain Phantoms appear when there's a storm, giving you something to really worry about when you're running through the rain in the dark. Very dangerous creatures
- Mine Apparitions are the haunted manifestations of trapped or killed miners. They look to spread their torment in abandoned mines and make you want to watch your step
- Magmafiends are large, cursed molten creatures that rise from the depths of lava. They're slow, but once they're out and about they're going to give you SERIOUS problems.
I like the SandStalker, but maybe it would be more of a Mummy. It could share many features with zombies, and would still have many of the attributes that you suggested. It could spawn in deserts, but especially in desert temples or something. Maybe a mummy-spawner thing could be involved.
I like the concept of the specter, but it doesn't feel quite right as of the moment. Some tweaking will probably be needed. I like the black hole projectile, but the shock wave doesn't seem to fit.
I don't really like the forest demon though. It just doesn't feel right with Minecraft.

thanks man! and the feedback is appreciated!
I really want to work on the forest demon, I'm thinking it might need another habitat or a different effect. For me, I want something to merely look like that and be scary - the rest can change
The shockwave is a bit of an annoying gimmick, I suspect most people won't like it. It's something that would keep players on edge when they're up on high ground and since they'd be uncommon it might have a positive effect, like when they're spotted it's like "OH MY GOD NO A SPECTRE, NONONONONO"
However perhaps the black hole projectile could have some kind of magnetizing/singularity effect in itself. Perhaps the impact it makes on a block (or player) would pull players/mobs towards it in a small radius. Still seems kinda pointless though.
OR! Maybe when the spectre dies, it makes a shockwave so if you don't get out of the way you'll.. yeah. I think I like this better. You're also right about the sandstalker being like a mummy. I wanted to change it to 'mummy' but it felt generic. In my head, it pretty much does look like a mummy and act like a zombie so you're quite spot-on about it. I want it to look really worn out, dried, horrific, too.

The shockwave after death is pretty good. It would keep me on edge for sure.
Yeah, I guess Mummy is kind of generic, but is fits the bill pretty solidly.
No problem. I like contributing. Glad I could help.
