I would love to see Mojang add a re-smelting mechanic to the game, not re crafting cause I have seen that and its OP. feel free to expand and elaborate on this, but I think for example we should be able to put a tool or sword, broken or not into a furnace and have it get smelted down back into an ingot. But the thing is it would only work with Iron, Gold, and maybe Diamond. Not wood or stone because you don't/ can't smelt those items. Same reason why I said maybe on diamonds. But it uses a damage scale. Starting at full and then to a certain point depending on the tool because each tool uses different amounts of ingots, you get all the ingots used, back. Than it decreases by one for a certain range of damage and so on and so forth. But as the %100 return value drops we keep a chance to get full. Like if I use a shovel that is damaged 3/4 of the tool durability than there is a higher percent that I get nothing but there is still a percent that I get 1 ingot. This would apply to all tools including swords, but instead of 1 ingot the 'full' would be however many ingots you used to make the tool and like I said feel free to expand and elaborate on this.
I really like the idea of smelting objects made from iron and gold back into a single ingot.
If that feels too overpowered, perhaps the items could be smelted into nuggets (of course, that would require iron nuggets, which is a different story).

This is why I said we would need to add a mathematical percential return ratio. All of which would depend on tool and damage done/ durability left.
Impossible with current furnace code. You could just make it that smelting a tool will always give 1 of the respective type (except diamond... diamond just evaporates when heated)
Diamonds don't evaporate.
Only water evaporates, the substance in the water is left.
