As far as mobs go, the Zombie Pigman has been a bit of a mystery to me. Of course, most of the confusion has been: What is a regular Pigman like?
I started looking through ideas and I have had multiple thoughts. It would likely be a new NPC mob, but we don't want Villagers who drop bacon, so it would have to be considerably different from the NPC Villagers.
I organized a few things that would explain why Zombie Pigmen are the way they are, for starters. These would also be major attributes of regular Pigmen.
• A fascination/obsession with gold would explain why ZP have gold swords and drop gold items.
• A reason they die and go to the Nether as opposed to staying in the Overworld, possibly from a fascination or obsession with fire.
• Fight/live in groups in Overworld.
They will resemble land pirates/raiders. Possibly with eyepatches, scars, and piglegs (pun intended.)
From this I composed a list of ideas for Overworld Pigmen.
• Spawn in Treeforts in Jungles.
- Rare structures (Slightly more rare than Villagers)
- Made of Jungle Wood, Fenceposts, Ladders, and Trees. Will have wooden bridges across trees.
- Treeforts contain chests, which may contain: gold ingot, gold nuggets, armor, saddles, flint and steel, carrots, swords, bows. Chests will slowly regain gold items as they are hoarders.
• Neutral NPC raiders/brigands who fight in groups.
- Can use wooden doors, ladders, and will rarely take gold items from nearby chests in surrounding biomes chests. The items will be put in their own chests afterward, so it will be retrievable.
- Fight in groups, hostile towards most other hostile mobs for self-defense. (Zombies, Skeletons, Spiders, etc. . .)
- Defend fort at night.
- Fight with wood/gold swords, occasionally use leather/gold armor.
• Will live in Tribes.
- When one Pigman is provoked in a tribe, the rest/nearby Pigmen will become hostile.
- Will responsively seek you out and attempt to devastate hurt you. (Burn your structures, kill you multiple times, etc. . .) Would just react mostly just like zombie pigmen, but will remain hasty towards you for an extended period of time rather than hostile.
• Three soldier types.
- Pigman Soldier: Fight with swords. Can use flint and steel.
- Pigman Archer: Use bows (sometimes enchanted with flame.)
- Pig Jockey: Pigman Soldier or Archer that rides a pig without the assistance of a carrot. Used for scouting.
• Will turn hostile against player at slightest misdirection.
- Example: If you hurt a pig nearby them.
• May possibly trade with gold. Feedback & Ideas needed.
• Zombies may infect Pigmen and turn them into Zombie Pigmen much like Villagers.
They will be slightly weaker statistically than zombie pigmen. Will also spawn in groups of 4, or in other words a tribe. Tribes may combine into bigger tribes. They remain with their tribe (theoretically) throughout to the Nether. http://www.minecraft...i/Zombie_pigman
As this is under the suggestment section, I invite suggestions. Please expand, suggest, and contribute in any way you can. ONLY CONSTRUCTED OR SUPPORTED CRITICISM IF ANY PLEASE!!! Otherwise commentary positive or negative is approved. Thank you.
I like everything but raiders because it's one of the worst ideas to have a group of mobs that just kill and take everything while being in a group that makes them really hard to beat.
Challenge is not rip your face over losing all your diamonds to a mob.

That bad huh.
I thought it added another depth to the game. It would motivate you to build stone houses with iron doors. They would be small groups, and the tribes would be neutral until provoked. Tribes would only consist of 8 members max anyway. It would be difficult I admit, but they won't take everything, nor will they kill everything. They are hostile towards hostile mobs for self-defense. They really shouldn't be that bad if you hide your gold.
I may not have been as specific. Sorry.
I would like suggestions for the raiding part though. What should I take out? What could you live with?
That kind of stuff.
I actually don't mind the raiders/brigands part b/c you could limit that easily. Regular Pigmen would only follow you if you are carrying gold ingots or nuggets. Otherwise they leave you alone unless attacked. If you have gold, they will attempt to trade you what they have in order to get the gold - emeralds, gold sword, etc. If you say no they will keep chasing you until the gold is not in your inventory. If they chase you for a certain amount of blocks, then they would become hostile from frustration.
I honestly don't think they need their own structure b/c bandits live in the woods. In my mind they would be roaming gangs like they roam in the Nether. They go to the Nether b/c in life they are bandits and if you do bad things you go to the Nether when you die. It would be possible to find them in abandoned structures, like strongholds or dungeons and on rare occasions villages. I say rare because golems would view Pigmen as hostile mobs. Villagers could possibly trade gold with them if a golem isn't around though.
There also doesn't need to be different types of Pigmen IMO. I think the sword wielding ones would be sufficient.
Zombies would attack Pigmen, and there is a 50/50 chance they will turn. If they turn, then they become ZP. If they die, they drop emeralds or gold but will pick up any dropped items. ZP and Pigmen will not help each other when attacked. Pigmen do not spawn in the Nether.
Just my two cents worth. A good idea if simplified considerably and the risk balanced with the reward. Deciding not to trade with bandits means you better get some distance.

Just not pigmen.
Notch (Or Jeb) has stated Pigmen will be added into the game soon. On Topic: I like everything except the Raiders.
