I'm fairly new to the minecraft forums and minecraft in general is at least partially new to me so please be patient if this a topic like this was already posted. and yes, i did try to check if it was or not. I was thinking though that it would be neat if obsidian could be given some new uses. Yes not everyone really likes going through the trouble of making obsidian. However, there are some who kind of like it. Black has a pretty kickass look to it, and i personally dislike the idea of using black wool. I was thinking that maybe obsidian should be given an operation similar to that of cobblestone. It would make sense i think because obsidian and cobblestone can be created in a similar way. the only diffence is whether it's run off lava or source lava that touches the water. I think that it would be nice if you were able to make things like obsidian stairs, obsidian fences, etc. I also think that you should be able to make obsidian into things like the walls you find in stronghold. (they may be bricks i'm not sure i haven't reached the stronghold yet). Also, i think it would be interesting if you could heat up obsidian the way you do cobble stone, in order to make smooth obsidian the way you can make ordinary smooth stone with cobble stone. Either that, or it could be in a way similar to how you use sandstone to make smooth sandstone. So that's about it, again i'm new please be mild if you have any complaints, and if you agree don't be afraid to send the idea in yourself, i don't really mind.
Not bad.....not like most obsidion ideas, that's for sure (Or any i've seen, anyway)
I like the idea of obsidion for decoration purposes. I'm sure it'll make castles look even more epic.

well im very glad you didnt suggest obsidian tools. all of the newbies suggest it.
but obsidian is a lesser, rarer block. wood, stone, bricks, sandstone, etc. are much more common and practical. i dont think people would go out of the way to get obsidian for there fences and such.
Yes, i agree, a lot of people may prefer wood. but if you're one of those people that does prefer the obsidian texture or wants something that's more efficient and that creepers can't, or at least have major trouble, blowing up, i just thought it would be nice to make a way in which it can also look nice at the same time. obsidian has it's uses, and i certainly don't think it should be used as tools, but it would still be nice to have it look better so that you can meld efficiency with looks. after all, the point of fences is for protection, and to keep mobs out, so wouldn't a stronger fence be interesting. If not that's fine with me to. I was just thinking that some people may find it nice. If you don't like it then please do say so, and if you do then please do support.
Obsidian stairs would be quite handy for death-fortresses, but nether-brick is good enough for that purpose, the only downside being that nether-brick requires a fair amount of luck/time, whereas you can probably start harvesting obsidian the moment you find diamonds.
Thank you, i was thinking the same thing! and about what Johnny said earlier about it being rare, i don't 100% agree. Sure it's more rare than stone and sand. but if you think about it some people take the time to collect nether brick, which takes time and luck. Also, once ur able to go to the nether it's not hard at all. all you need is a large area place the lava, and to make a few trips to the nether. make sure your portal goes right to the gigantic sea of lava in the nether and your fine. an instant 27 buckets full of lava, meaning that in minutes you can collect quite a bit of obsidian. Also, a lot of people don't use survival mode when it comes to wanting things to look nice. As the reasoning behind this has a lot to do with decoration, a lot of people would use it in creative mode.

It was my idea first, and y'all need to stop stealing it.
