I posted an idea called Toggle Block. I think my idea would work well with this one. If anyone here likes this idea, also please take a look at mine. If I can get enough support and someone could make a mod for me, maybe our ideas could be combined.
Edit: @IVCraft: My last signature was poking fun at Ms_Britten, the former M&M admin (and my girlfriend). It annoyed her so I thought I would change it.
Wow. Amazing work there! I couldn't think of a better way to do it!
I'll put it on the OP right now!
(Omg it topo me a month only to type this on my mobile phone, right now i can't use my computer)
This needs to be added, with one change. If, in the engine, the redstone torch was on top of a piston the piston would push forwards. There would have to be some sort of new block that only powers certain blocks, but it's still a good basic idea!
So, the torch will power the block under it? THAT can be a problem. But this may need some testing. Also, if the torch is placed on a solid block, wouldn't it lead to an infinite loop? The torch would flicker on, powering the block, flickering it off, and so on till the torch burns out.
Although pistons are kinda glitchy, I fear some block update bug could render the piston motor impossible...

I don't think torches power blocks underneath, don't quote me though.
Woah this is awesome. It's not like it hasn't been suggested before, but the way you present it is great. Be in charge of marketing or something Support.
There's one thing I don't get though, what does the exception to the exception mean? What do you mean child block breaking the block, how? Does that mean any block?
I hate people who complain. I hate spiders. I hate people who own an Xbox One. I hate people who like sandbox games. I hate people who like first person shooters. I hate people who like explosions. I hate people who like video games. I hate people who are hateful. I hate people that don't like spam. I hate people who like cake. I hate people who type in proper grammar and spell words properly on the internet. I hate hypocrites.
Wondering how they would handle the coding aspect of this,
Like how to detect when a block is destroyed vs. moved, or would it be that difficult? because when a block is destroyed you would still want it to destroy the child object, like a torch on the wall. etc....

It's like this:
P = Piston
B = Block
L = Lever on the block
T = Torch
PBBBBLT
When the piston extends, the lever moves forward, but doesn't break when it reaches the torch, instead, the torch itself breaks.
PBBBBLB
In this case, the lever won't break the block, only push it. That's what I meant with "push\break the block in front of it".
Hope it's clear now.

*starts to tear up*

p.s. who doesn't love redstone
It defiantly deserves to as pistons are so limited now. Dynamic light sources would be a-maz-ing!

But maybe it wouldn't be that big of a deal.

It would look just like this:
But fully self contained and would need no rails.
