So, I had an idea for a new mob, and a new dog behavior, and some other stuff, and then I realized they could all fit together as one thing. Anywhere, here goes.
Devildog
Undead Dog Mob
Transportation: Walking
Mode of Attack: standard melee
Special Quality: Fireproof
Devil Dogs look like regular wolves, but with red fur and glowing yellow eyes. They are night-spawned Monstrous Mobs (like creepers, spiders and skeletons) and undead, meaning they're vulnerable to sunlight and Smite-enchanted weaponry.
Devildogs also come in a neutral, giant form. Giant Devildogs will usually appear in the far distance, bark, shake themselves off, then vanish. They're purely aesthetic.
Devildogs, when killed, drop dogtags.
Dogtag
Dogtags can be used to name dogs. They can be found in most chests or are dropped by Devil Dogs.
Dog Whistle
Dog whistles are items that allow you to summon your dogs no matter how far away they are, but they only work on named dogs. Right-click on a named dog with a Dog Whistle, and that dog will appear whenever the whistle is used. After the dog is summoned, you can blow it again to send him to his doggie bed if he has one.
Special behavior: If a dog assigned to a dog-whistle is killed and the whistle is blown, a Devil Dog may appear in its place and attack you.
Dog whistles are crafted from two sticks and a sugar cane.
Doggie Bed
Doggie beds have a gui that allows you to assign a single dog to sleep there and dictate the behavior of the dog sleeping there. Dogs that sleep there can be on "Summon alert" (won't move unless summoned via dog whistle), "Guard Alert" (Engages nearby non-creeper mobs automatically), "Sleep" (purely decorative). Doggie beds serve as spawn points for dogs to be summoned from and dismissed.
Another slot in the GUI allows you to stack a bit of meat for them to eat automatically if they're wounded, but it only holds one.
Doggie beds are crafted from one block of Wool and one Wood Plank.
I like it all but the whistle only working on named wolfs
There's a couple of reasons for that. First of all, the whistle should only be able to summon a particular number of dogs at a time. This way, you get to pick which dogs are summoned and you can use different whistles to summon or dismiss certain dogs.
The alternative is either summoning every dog you own (which can be a problem, if you own, say, a dozen dogs or more dogs, the way I do) summon the nearest dogs (defeats the point of the whistle), or summon nameless dogs, which...
well, I also wanted to create a reason to name dogs aside from the obvious practical ones.
My idea's a tiny bit different in a few ways. I don't hold much truck with new species of wolves and lots of complicated breeding schemes and everything. I just want dogs to be more reliable as a defensive tool in the game, plus I got sick of my dogs killing themselves when I don't want them to fight.
Mmm...instead of making him an overworld spawn, make him a nether mob! I also like the idea of a dogtag, its so difficult to keep dogs straight.
I was thinking about making him a nether mob, hence the "special quality--fireproof". Still not sure how I feel about it; the nether is pretty packed with mobs as-is.
I love this Idea! My problem with tamed animals is having them spawn to me if I left the area, was attacked, then returned to the area, (making me have to reposition all of my anti-creeper sentry cats, and put my favorite dog safely back in my house. )
Extend the idea of beds/whistles/nametags to cats and you have my vote!
Also, the Devildogs do seem much more like a nether mob. I wouldn't want them to attack in packs though, I have enough issues with accidentaly bumping pigmen while mining...

I was gonna make a cool signature pic...But then I got bored and discovered Dragon Cave.

Not sure about whistles, but nametags and beds definitely seem like cat-related stuff.
