Currently, armor is very easy to get, yet is very strong. For only 24 iron, you can get nigh immunity to most enemy attacks except for those from endermen, creepers, and nether mobs (and even then it helps cut down damage significantly). This makes Minecraft significantly easier to the point of being a cakewalk without self-imposed challenges or mods.
I propose a new armor system. Each armor now has a different recipe to make it harder to get, and there are a few new recipes as well. Chainmail is also now obtainable.
Leather
Leather remains unchanged.
Chainmail
Chainmail is now craftable, using the vanilla iron armor recipe.
Studded (Iron/Gold)
Studded armor is similar to chainmail stat-wise, but it's a much cheaper option if you can spare the leather. Iron studded armor is identical to chainmail in terms of stats, but has leather durability. Gold studded armor has a single extra defense point compared to normal leather, but it has the same durability. Both have the enchantability of the full versions.
Same thing for gold studding.
Iron Plate
Iron armor is now much harder to get.
First, you have to craft a crude set of armor like so:
Crude iron plate armor is identical to chainmail. For the finished product, you must craft the crude iron equipment with more iron as such:
This is the finished iron set. It is identical to the vanilla iron armor.
Gold Plate
Gold armor is crafted like iron is. Just replace the iron ingots and crude iron armor with the gold variant.
Full crude gold is identical to studded gold armor. Full gold is the same as vanilla gold armor.
Diamond-Studded Iron Armor
Diamond-studded iron armor is pretty much just vanilla diamond armor. You won't have to sacrifice more diamonds than normal for this, but you will need to have full iron armor (although I may consider gold too as a different variant).
(Before you say "If you want difficulty, switch to hardcore!", hardcore does not make the game any more difficult. You don't die frequently enough for hardcore to be challenging rather than annoying.)
What do you propose happens to the existing "iron armor" or "diamond armor" in maps? Do they get deleted? Are they replaced by the new armor? Is that even possible?

The introduced iron, gold and diamond armors would use the current iron, gold and diamond armor IDs. Crude variants would have their own ID as would studded variants.
No. If iron armour makes you that strong, try Hard difficulty.
It still makes you very very strong for a very low cost. It's 24 iron for near-guaranteed survivability. Sure, if you would get killed by zombie pigmen and blazes if you aren't careful (and of course you would get bulldozed by the Wither) but you'd have to be an idiot to challenge any of those, and only the Wither actually requires better armor.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
This idea is not one of the better ones but maybe it could be on hard and hardcore only.
Some of us like the simpleness of armor and don't want to spend bucket loads of iron for one armor set.
But, some of us like the challenge of more hardcore armor like this.

If it were exclusively on hard, you could just switch over to normal and craft normal iron armor and switch back to hard. It's not much more than a self imposed challenge with the current difficulty system.
It's also not really the iron requirement for the iron, but the leather. Leather is harder to get than iron (for some obsucre reason) which is why the highest tier armors require a suit of the stuff. I added extra iron because it IS extremely common.

Firstly, I can rarely find cows, let alone leather. This would make armour harder to obtain as you can't really find cows (I haven't really seen a lot).

That's the point, though I do agree that leather is too rare.
increase spawn rate, and I may give my support.
Just make a cow farm. Armor is already very good for its cost (except for leather and gold, but those are inferior anyway) so it should either get nerfed or be made harder to get. Minecraft is too easy as it is, even with difficulty levels and "hardcore" mode.
I like how easy it is to get armor.
If I didn't have iron armor I'd have been dead a long time ago in my world (I've yet to die once). I'm on hard mode and I've been through a few caves and the nether all with the same set of iron armor (which I eventually enchanted).
Basically the Minecraft world is ruthless, if you don't have iron armor you're basically dead as soon as you step out your door (I almost got killed the first day in that world cuz a creeper was hanging outside my door and blew me up (wasn't in armor that time though)). Eventually I got iron armor and wasn't as worried about mobs cuz they become a lot more survivable.
For some people it's hard to get armor (I've never had enough leather for leather armor), but those are the people who don't spend a lot of time underground mining (or they're just unlucky). If you mine a lot you're gonna get iron armor fairly quickly, and I think that's fine due to how dangerous the world is. You're also very likely to run into a cavern while mining, which you pretty much can't explore unless you've got some form of armor and a few billion torches (caverns are huge :P).

I don't think Minecraft is too easy. I think it's enjoyably difficult. As in, it's at a difficulty level that's just right, it's enough that you can get through it just fine, but not too much that you're going to die if you even attempt anything. And either way, even if they nerf armor players are still gonna find Minecraft just as easy if it's only made harder to get because rather than go into the Nether right away or start fighting mobs they're gonna keep on mining until they've got all the iron they need. Then they'll go do whatever they were gonna do and all that's gonna happen is it will take longer to do anything.
Making it take longer to get items isn't more difficult, it's more repeditive and boring. As for making the current armor weaker and adding stronger versions, I see no reason to as all that's really going to do is make the player take longer to get the resources. I personally wouldn't settle for the weaker iron armor, I'd keep mining until I'd gotten the resources to make the strongest version; and most other players would do the same (I'd assume so anyways). Really the only use the weaker armor would have is just to make the player feel more secure as they continued to mine for more materials to make it stronger.
I like how easy it is to get armor.
If I didn't have iron armor I'd have been dead a long time ago in my world (I've yet to die once). That's the problem; iron armor is WAY too easy to get yet is still very very good. I'm on hard mode and I've been through a few caves and the nether all with the same set of iron armor (which I eventually enchanted). You're playing on HARD mode and you've never died and you never needed to switch out of your armor. That's saying something, isn't it?
Basically the Minecraft world is ruthlessish, if you don't have iron armor you're basically dead as soon as you step out your door (I almost got killed the first day in that world cuz a creeper was hanging outside my door and blew me up (wasn't in armor that time though)). See what I mean? That's the entire point. Of course, though, the substitute for armor is care. As of now, you can be fairly careless and walk in to a cave and die, or you could walk in to a cave expecting everything and make it out with enough iron for chainmail so that it's a little easier to survive. Eventually I got iron armor and wasn't as worried about mobs cuz they become a lot more survivable. More like a nuisance.
For some people it's hard to get armor (I've never had enough leather for leather armor) which is why you go straight to iron, but those are the people who don't spend a lot of time underground mining (or they're just unlucky). Don't spend a lot of time mining? Make a diamond mine. It's completely safe and nets you all sorts of materials so that you can make iron armor and a diamond sword in safety so that the rest of the world is now safe. If you mine a lot you're gonna get iron armor fairly quickly, and I think that's fine due to how dangerous the world is. The world isn't terribly dangerous. The only way you can die without armor is by not paying attention and by making the wrong decisions. The only way you can die with (good) armor is by ticking off a blaze or a pigman (both of whom practically ignore armor) You're also very likely to run into a cavern while mining, which you pretty much can't explore unless you've got some form of armor and a few billion torches (caverns are huge ). Go around or do it anyway. As long as you don't stick around too long, you'll be fine. Of course, it's irrelevant when you have armor since it's so strong.
I don't think Minecraft is too easy. I think it's enjoyably difficult. As in, it's at a difficulty level that's just right, it's enough that you can get through it just fine, but not too much that you're going to die if you even attempt anything. Unless your skill outmatches hard mode, in which case you're forced to use self imposed challenges or mods, but that's more of a general difficulty issue. For me, I find hard mode too easy (yet annoying because I like to have wooden doors and I want them intact). And either way, even if they nerf armor players are still gonna find Minecraft just as easy if it's only made harder to get because rather than go into the Nether right away or start fighting mobs they're gonna keep on mining until they've got all the iron they need. Iron is practically irrelevant since it's fairly common. All it means in terms of iron is that you'll need 35 iron instead of 24. The main thing is leather, because (for some reason) it's fairly rare. You can still make do with chainmail if you can't spare any leather or studded if you can't spare any iron. Then they'll go do whatever they were gonna do and all that's gonna happen is it will take longer to do anything. That's only if they feared death. Sure, that's inevitable with the Wither, but what if the player thought "Hey, maybe I don't need that iron armor for that nether fortress, I can just make do with chainmail!" and then they'll go and do it and try to survive rather than survive easily in iron. The point is, iron makes difficulty irrelevant and is too easy to get for it's price, which is why it is so much harder to get in the suggestion. I added chainmail and studded so that there was a lower quality replacement if you couldn't spare some of the materials for iron.
Making it take longer to get items isn't more difficult, it's more repeditive and boring. Only if you bother to do it that way. As for making the current armor weaker and adding stronger versions though it's more like making the current armor harder to get and adding weaker versions, I see no reason to as all that's really going to do is make the player take longer to get the resources. If people want nigh-invulnerability badly enough to farm cows and mine iron for it, then they deserve it. I personally wouldn't settle for the weaker iron armor, I'd keep mining until I'd gotten the resources to make the strongest version; Cows are an ore? and most other players would do the same (I'd assume so anyways). You can't really speak for everyone here. Really the only use the weaker armor would have is just to make the player feel more secure as they continued to mine for more materials to make it stronger. Once again, you can't really speak for everyone. If you want nigh-invulnerability, go right ahead and go through the slog it takes to get it. If you want to get something done right now, make the chainmail (or not) and go do it.
Comments in bold.
For those who think that armor isn't really that powerful, think about it; what are the strongest mobs?
There are cave spiders, whose poison IGNORES ARMOR.
There are blazes, whose fire IGNORES ARMOR.
There are zombie pigmen, who BRUTE FORCE THROUGH ARMOR.
There's the wither, who both BRUTE FORCES THROUGH ARMOR and has a special poison that IGNORES ARMOR.
In contrast, most of the other mobs are too weak to get through the armor or don't attack quickly enough. Creepers are the most feared but far from the most difficult since they've only got one attack.
