I was thinking that instead of apples dropping from oak trees there should be a new tree called the apple tree. This new tree would have a half of a percent chance of spawning in a plains biome chunk. When an "apple tree chunk" spawns about 3 to 4 apple trees spawn in it. These apple trees come in two different varieties. The red apple and the green apple.
The Red Apple Tree
This tree would have a trunk of oak wood 5-7 blocks high. The leaves would appear to have red apples inside them. These new leaves could be collected with shears. To plant a red apple tree you would put the apple in the crafting table and 4 seeds would come from it. The seeds would have to be planted in a plant pot. It would take 2-4 minecraft days to grow into a sapling. Right clicking the pot will allow you to pick up the sapling. The sapling can then be planted on plowed farmland. The sapling must be planted two blocks or less away from a water source. The sapling then grows into a full tree in 4-6 days.
Harvesting
To harvest you would right click the tree leaves and 1 apple would drop from each leaf (on easy mode. To harvest the tree normal mode you still right click the leaf but it has a 50% chance of dropping a apple. On hard mode you have to break the tree leaf and the leaf has a 20% chance of dropping an apple. On easy and normal mode the tree takes 5-8 minecraft days to grow apples on the leaves. Now you might be wondering why there is such a complicated growing process. This is to ensure that you can't over produce apples and it adds a whole new aspect to gardening/farming. Also the plant pot has a use now other than decoration.
The Green Apple Tree
This tree would have a birch wood trunk that is 4-5 blocks tall. The leaves would appear to have green apples growing in them. These leaves could also be collected with shears. To get the seeds you would put the green apple in the crafting table and it would produce one seed. The growing process is the same as the red apple tree.
Harvesting
To harvest the tree you would right click the leaves and there is a 50% chance the green apple would be dropped. ( On easy and normal mode ) On hard mode you have to break the tree leaf and there is a 20% chance it would be dropped. On easy and normal mode it takes 10 minecraft days for the apples to regrow.
These apples restore half a hunger point and be used as a potion ingredient. (I don't know what the potion should be yet.)
Places to plant
These trees can not be planted in taiga desert or ice plains.

Hmm... I see where you're going, but I don't really like the idea of having two new tree types just for apples. Perhaps Oak trees could just have leaf blocks that definitely drop apples, but only have a 1/100 chance of generating on them?

I see but I would still prefer the new tree as it would make gardening more enjoyable,

Im going to have to side with Crimso. I like the idea of rare apple-leaf blocks better than new apple trees, while your suggestion was rather good. Anyway, anyone else think trees should drop the occasional stick from leaves?

Yeah I've always thought they should too.

Crimso's idea sounds much more... do-able for the people at Mojang, so I agree with Crimso for that and I give OP credit for sparking the idea as well.

True its not necessarily made to be efficient. Its just a better way to get apples rather than cutting down tons of oak trees.
