Since bats were added, I noticed that they do nothing whatsoever. I've come up with some more ideas for things bats could do.
Section I: Standard Bats
These bats would be identical to the existing bats, but with altered spawn conditions. They would spawn in larger groups in caves, and only at or above level 32. They would also spawn hanging from trees in forest and mountain biomes. In the morning, bats would look for either a tree or a cave to spend the day.
Section II: Fruit Bats
Fruit bats would be five times larger than standard bats and would spawn on trees at or above level 64 in jungle biomes. They would act almost identical to standard bats, with the exception of landing on and eating cocoa beans every 10-30 minutes of activity. If they locate a player with a red apple in their hand, they will attempt to take the apple from their hand. In the morning, they would only seek shelter in trees or caves above level 64 and only if there is enough space for them.
Section III: Vampire Bats
Vampire bats would be half the size of a regular bat with the same spawn and rest conditions as fruit bats. At night, they would latch on to players and passive mobs, doing half a heart of damage. They would stay there for 5 minutes unless they or their prey were killed before then. While they are latched onto players, health would only be restored to 19 hit points unless health or regen potions are used. Doing this will also remove the bat. Having a bat attached to you will ward off zombie villagers. After 5 minutes, they wait 10-30 minutes of activity before seeking new prey.
Section IV: General Information
All bats would avoid light and players carrying torches.

that sounds good, but none of the mobs in mc are that advanced most of m wander around doing well not much lol.
the apple idea would work the same as wheat but for mobs to go to certain places at certain times would be hard i guess.
Does anyone get that bat's aren't supposed to do anything? They were added purely for aesthetics. No one wanted/ever planned on making them another farmable mob.
I would have liked to have seen bats turned into a tamable mob via berries. Upon having tamed them, however, you would get them within your inventory like an item. You could then craft them, with paper, to turn them into a "Carrier Bat" which would permit you to write a message onto the bat and have it seek out a player, who's name you designate, as a means of transmitting secret information or taunts.

Agreed. With the cocoa part too, it would be horrible. 10/20 fruit bats in a jungle? In a few hours of mining under the jungle, no more cocoa.
We don't really need three different bats. I'm not going to want a bat latched onto my neck no matter what benefit. I'd never go out ever again. The fruit bats would wipe out cocoa population, and why are they the size of Ghasts?

NO SUPPORT! For the love of Pete's Dragon!
Bats are an aesthetic mob. How many times can this possibly be stated before people stop trying to come up with ways to 'improve' them? They're fantastic ambience right now, they're amazing. They're cute! They're a sign of potential things to come! Let's just kindly leave this poor dead horse to rest in peace, and carry on, shall we?
After reading through the replies, I've come to the conclusion that maybe the fruit and vampire bats should have much lower spawn rates than regular bats.
To answer Eraed's question, real fruit bats are massive. Not quite as massive as the fruit bats for the game, but given that a regular bat has a wingspan of about a meter, the fruit bats would have to be gigantic to have decent proportions to the regular bats.

Kind of like a traveling book.
