So, with the addition of anvils, we get to name our tools, right? That's excellent, but I feel that there should be something more.
You see, Minecraft is awesome, but adding more things to customize, to make unique to you and memorable survival experiences, will vastly increase how much we can enjoy the game. You know, it makes it that much easier to feel like you're immersed in the game world, and makes it more enjoyable, as well.
I suggest that, one way we can do so, is to allow some way to color our tools, much like how we can dye leather armor to be a ton of different colors. Now, just adding the dye and the tool wouldn't really be a good idea, considering how, well, in real life, that may not work well for metals, let alone diamonds. It may involve dyes in some other way, though.
Here's my idea for how to do this. Get a cauldron, fill it with some water, and add some dyes to it. The cauldron's water will change color accordingly. (For Lapis Lazuli, it would probably become a darker blue) Let it sit for about one Minecraft day (~10 minutes) and it will become a bit thicker. (The water animation will be slowed, or would resemble the appearance of lava more, but in whatever color it is) At this point, right click with your tool of choice, and its color will be changed! (By color of the tool, I mean like, the blue on the Diamond Pickaxe, the wood on the Bow, almost all of the Diamond Sword, etc.) The color will carry over upon repairs from anvils.
All of us, I'm sure, would love to customize our tools to make them look epic, and I'm sure you know what I mean. However, considering that would take a long time to code and whatnot, I'd say this idea is at least a good start.
Some of you are also thinking that you can just edit the tool's picture in the files, or use a texture pack. While, yes, you could do that, that's not the point. You can have differently-colored pickaxes to differentiate between your good pickaxe and your Silk Touch pickaxe, or to show off your awesome sword on a multiplayer server, where players may be using different texture packs (Or default)
So, what do you think? Any additions you would make? Is it a good idea at all? Let me know!
I don't like how you can dye all tools, you could easily mimic a diamond sword, or an iron sword using a wood one. I think only Wood Tools should be dyable, and show an obvious resemblance to being a wood tool but still looks good.
While the possibility of having one kind if tool resembling another because of this would be present, only dying wooden tools would be entirely missing the point, which is to help the play feel immersed in the game. You probably aren't going to use the wooden tools just for their dye-able-ness, just as we're unlikely to use leather armor for similar reasons.
That too is possible, but it's only just a few pixels changed, which I don't think would be enough. Though, that is rather logical, I'll give you that, but Minecraft has never been about logic... Excluding redstone.
I have thought of ideas similar to this in the past il ike this idea of dying a tool but maybe instead of putting the dye in the cauldron maybe put 8 dye in the bench with a pair of shears and get a colored band or strips or whatever it could be named then you put that in the bench under the tool to make the hilt or handle colored, but geting the blade or head colored maybe put dye mixed with a milk bucket and adding that to the cauldron and instead of 1 day make it 2 or 3, then you could make a wooden spoon, like a shovel but with 1 stick, to mix and make the color lighter or darker, then you put the tool in your hand and right click on the cauldron and get a wet tool, then put it in a furnace and have it take about 1 minecraft day to dry then the top is colored

Uh... Okay. I't'd be easier to understand if your entire paragraph was not one whole sentence
