Hey, I think the villagers could use a little bit of improvement. I find it super annoying when i find a village and me, because I don't find villages alot I start living there. I try to keep the villagers alive, but i just cant! I think villagers should have smarter AI and do things such as replacing doors that Zombies break down, and maby even self defence with perhaps a sword. Also i find that the villagers trades are kind of unfair. I dont see any benifit from having a trade system that is not benificial...
What do you think?
Luis, generally i'm playing on Hardcore, or Hard mode with cheats off, so I can't spawn the villagers back in even if i wanted too. Also when start a new world usually the first thing i look for is a village. I have tried to build walls around the village, but when i come back to the surface from strip mining cobble, or return from gathering wood, all of the villagers are allready dead.
What I am sugesting is not a complete overhaul of the village system, just a few tweeks with their behavior such as:
Ability to hurt mobs (not in a completely overpowerd way, but a balenced one) and just as small as making the trades more beneficial to the player
I think before they deal with Villager self-defense and rudimentary door-building, they need to fix the bugs in the villager AI that occasionally make fifty people crowd into a single small shack when it rains. I mean, at least have them all crowd into a building that's commensurate with the size of the crowd.
I do like the idea of a village in the wilderness where everyone huddles together from the rain, but when they all huddle in something the size of an outhouse while a big empty library or something is next door, it breaks the magic a little bit.

I've been around the block at village defense so I can tell you that you definitely need a wall. It's rudimentary village defense. If you can't put up a wall right way, dig a 3 deep trench around the village and use the materials to make a wall that you can easily break through but that the villagers can't jump over. (2-high is sufficient for this.) also, you could trap them in buildings that have light levels unfit for mob spawning until you have a wall set up by blocking the doors with dirt.

Hey, RunnerX thanks for the tips on how to protect the villagers. I will probably use the boxing in to the houses a great deal. As for the wall, I am one of those people that if they are going to have a wall it will have to be somthing massive and spectacular which takes a grat deal of time to make, and i really really hate dirt structures. Anyway Thanks!

I totally agree! Right now trading with villagers is little more than a novelty - I am disappointed.
I think the developers are trying to avoid making it easy to survive by trading with the villagers and trying to prevent trading becoming a much easier route to "valuable" items than mining. I understand their concern but I have to believe there's a way to make trading actually beneficial without making mining pointless.

A reason to find desert wells, make hasty crossings, & build stone firepits to set wood alight in the snow.
