Either one is fine, just a way to zoom in your sight rather then having to go explore it by walking to the place. So right click while the item is in hand and zoom it, it has unlimited uses as well. I was thinking it could help with maps as well but not sure, maybe just a simple zoom is all that's needed. As I said instead of walking there you can zoom in to see if you'd like to go over somewhere instead.
The Telescope:
The Binoculars:
One or the other, not both. (Edited: Although a point was brought up later in the thread that if both are use, the binoculars would add the ability to show mobs besides just terrain.)
Later on in the posts this idea was narrowed down to just the Lens idea which has many implication But I'll let people expand on that and not me because I will probably over complacent things with the Lens idea which I usually do.
Not bad. I like the explore map from a distance idea. perhaps just one or the other? Seems a bit redundant to have both. Otherwise I like it. (Fixed)
I'll add my stamp of approval when I get home.

Excellent idea. I definitely support this. It'd probably work like Optifine's zooming feature, but maybe you can zoom in and out.
I agree with the changing it to gold, too. Just because it seems appropriate for it.
Okay, well I'm glad folks like the idea, I had something more to add to it but I wanted to wait for more people to support it. I personally like the telescope more. So, the regular Telescope gives you 1.5x that means your line of sight plus 1.5x.
Here's the new blueprints:
Now pretend the gold block is the outcome of the above:
Doing this way three more times you get .5x to your zoom, a total of 3x zoom once your are done. By left clicking you look through it and by right clicking you can open it 4 times. First time to 1.5x and up to 3x. To complicated If not, we can keep it the old way, but I think 1.5x is the slandered zoom.
Only issue I see is with people who use the smaller view distances.
I thought about some kinda telescope item as well, at one point. Would be great to stand on my tower and scope out places before wasting time running over to it.
Why not introduce a lense that could be crafted with iron blocks or ingots to form a telescope? The lense could be made by place three glass in a ">" shape. I have no idea how to get one of those crafting table picture things =/
This way the lense could be used in future updates for things such as lanterns, a bow that allows you to zoom in or whatever.
Been in favor of this for awhile, but I've been to lazy to post. Standing atop my stockade walls wondering if I'll catch sight of a villager zombie to capture brought me back to thoughts of this suggestion. As a practical tactician and inventor, this idea appeals to me for obvious reasons, but I'm a tad concerned with the crafting format:
Firstly, gold? lol no. (gold DOES need more uses though) Second, take the glass block out of the top right corner and just make a telescope. I do not favor the binocular idea, however; it just doesn't seem to fit the game's "sword and sorcery" "time period"/layout. (that said, Minecraft, being a game to have swords, anvils, and mounted combat in conjunction with jukeboxes, lamps, and doorbells, is not one to abide by ANY time period I'VE ever heard of. xD)

Okay, first the Lens:
The lens makes perfect senses, now add the telescope into it while pretending the glass block is a lens here.
I really love this idea, make a magnifying glass and light a field on fire.
As for zoom idea being a potion, no; and as for the Ender Pearl adding night vision, we already have a night vision potion, maybe adding a Eye of Ender to the mix can allow you to only see hostile mobs or something like heat sensor.
My favorite tool in WoW was the Ornate Spyglass. Very simplistic little device, but as a Rogue...there was no greater weapon within your arsonel within RPPVPVE servers. Stay hidden amongst the fog...use the Spyglass to seek out prey...and then go in for the kill. It was strange how few used them, they landed me so many kills...being able to stalk my prey without them ever knowing, without wasting my stealth.
Pretending the glass block is again, a lens from my previous post, we make the magnify glass. An alternate way to set stuff on fire and only works in direct sun light. These can also work in a way to direct sun like, so a way to activate things such as redstone but only when the sun comes up. There are many possibilities with the lens...maybe I should make a singe thread on just the lens cause that would get more feedback the the telescope idea.
Here is my suggestion. Don't make it too complicated. 2 gold Ingots and a Glass is FINE =p
Anything else would make it a hastle to make.
Example] You don't have to make gears for clocks.
Post the changes/possible changes into the origional post.

Um... Dingo, your picture link is messed up. How do I get to the gold golem page?

OVER COMPLICATED so scratched out.
Full support!

Yeah... If I could place lenses, I'd mirror tons of sunlight into a superlaser to destroy Alderaan... Or maybe just this pig.
