The current monster spawners are just a cage with a mob spinning inside. Since almost everything now is being redesigned to look prettier I thought of some ways to improve them.
Basically what I suggest is simply adding a couple of new blocks which would act exactly like the old spawners but with different looks.
1. Cursed tombstone
It's a tombstone emitting dim greenish light and light greenish fog in spawn radius. Works like a zombie spawner. On destruction drops 0-1 moss stone, 0-2 cobblestone & 1-3 cursed stones (those are used to craft this spawner).
(Recipe coming soon)
2. Pile of bones
Small pile of bones and gear (bows, swords, armor) emitting dim yellow light and light white fog in spawn area. On destruction drops 0-1 piece of gear, 0-4 bonemeal & 1-3 cursed bones (those are used to craft this spawner).
(Recipe coming soon)
3. Spider egg hatch
A hatch of spider eggs emitting either dim blue or dim red light and light blue or light red fog in spawn area. On destruction drops 0-2 spider eyes, 0-2 string & 1-3 spider eggs (those are used to craft this spawner).
(Recipe coming soon)
I'll add recipes when I get to my computer - most likely tomorrow.
The way that spawners work, and with the new, editable spawner changes, this would be a lot to change for just aesthetic appeal. In addition, the concept of craftable spawners would break the game more than even farms, mob grinders, etc. have.
On the other hand, having multiple different blocks for spawners would allow for placement in creative mode without needing a /spawner type command, although they should still not be craftable.
By this you're suggesting that spawners can also be crafted in survival? Hence the recipes. Right? Althought your suggestions sound cool if they were to change the spinning mob-in-a-cage to those different blocks, Mojang wouldn't want to make exp farms easier for us.

I dare you to move your cursor to the green box on the bottom left of these words, and give it a click. I would give you a diamond, but I've lost it.

I agree with Delay3d that they probably wouldn't give us curse stones to build our own monster spawners or move existing ones, because this might make it too easy to set up monster farms.
About the design ideas, they sound good, but I think the skeletons might as well spawn from graves or dark portals with the zombies.
