What if there was a block that was intangible and see-through in creative mode, but solid and opaque in survival/adventure mode? It would act like a door or window for people in creative mode, but be totally undetectable for those in different modes.
Intangible Blocks
This block comes in several different textures, identical to common materials including dirt, grass, stone, cobblestone, stone brick, and oak planks. They are invulnerable and immovable like bedrock.
In creative mode these blocks are transparent and faintly visible, and you can pass through them as though nothing is there. You can click to break them.
In survival/adventure mode these blocks look completely normal and are 100% solid. The only way to tell the difference from the real blocks they copy is that they can't be broken or moved.
This would have a huge range of purposes. Build access doors to quickly move around structures without breaking walls. Create windows so you can see hidden piston machinery and redstone circuits. Create secret messages writtten on the ground that only people flying overhead in creative mode can see, by covering colored wool letters with transparent fake grass. The uses are practically endless.
That would add loads more block item codes to the game, would that not? Hmm.. I'm not sure.

I dare you to move your cursor to the green box on the bottom left of these words, and give it a click. I would give you a diamond, but I've lost it.

I doubt this would even be possible until the overhaul of the rendering and lighting engines are completed. That said, It's a decent idea, just not one that is going to be possible for a while I think. An easy way to accomplish this would be a vanilla option to change your texture pack with your gamemode, but even then it wouldn't have the full functionality that you're looking for. I suppose a damage value of -1 could conceivably be used to affect transparency selectively depending on gamemode, but that's getting deeper into coding territory than I'm willing to tread so early in the morning.
I'll give it my support if it can be accomplished painlessly.
