The whole system of trading written books with NPC villagers currently makes no sense. Any books you sell are basically destroyed, so you would never sell a good one (e.g., an actual story or poetry). Thus, the only written books you'd sell would be empty, or at least full of garbage - but then why would a villager buy such a book?
A good solution would be for NPC villages to have libraries. If you sell a written book to a villager, then all libraries within the world will contain copies of that book. With this system, you would want to sell good written books to villagers in order to distribute them. It would also make sense why villagers would buy your written books; presumably, they want to stock their libraries.
The best way to implement this, in my opinion, would be to create a new block: a special kind of bookcase that can't be crafted and only spawns in village libraries. Right-clicking on this block would display a menu that lists all of the written books that have been sold to librarians. From this menu, you could then "check out" a book of your choice, which would place a copy of it in your inventory.
Did you even read the OP? Anyway, I like this idea, support.

No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...

No support. Why? We already have enough useless data taking up space on the servers. The last thing I want is dozens, perhaps hundreds of the same book taking up array space just waiting for somebody to read it? Do people actually write/distribute books in SMP? I don't think I've ever seen a book used for anything other than adventure maps and list of rules.

First, written books are totally useless as they are. Even as a list of rules - since they can't be copied, you need to manually write out each one you give to players. The reason players don't write books, I think, is because they cannot be distributed. Why take the time to write a book to give to a player, who will just store it in his chest forever (which is no better than destroying it)?
Second, it shouldn't take up any extra space on the server. 100 copies of the same book shouldn't ever cause 100 copies of the same text to be stored in server memory - every copy would just reference the same text.
Nevertheless, even if Minecraft was that stupid, the text for one book shouldn't take more than a couple kilobytes anyway. A hundred copies of that would still amount to less than one megabyte, which I doubt is significant for a server.
I can't believe two people have said this already. Didn't you read my OP? I was referring to *written books* being stored in the libraries!

Put a copy of your book in a chest, copy and paste the chest in MCedit, and keep on doing that until you get the desired amount of books

I would also like to see already written tales appear on these bookshelves. Some good light reading would be nice.
My mega long suggestion for Brewing & Farming!
