There is no smoke...fire sets other things on fire within a 1x1x5 block radius which has been nerfed already, and frankly, many people want it to spread even farther. Just when making you chimney, make a real chimney out of bricks or stone, no big problem as long as there isn't any flamable blocks in the area. As long as your fireplace isn't made of wood, you shouldn't have any problems.
More precisely, a fire (or lava) block can turn any air block that is adjacent to a flammable block into a fire block. This can happen at a distance of up to one block downwards, one block sideways (including diagonals), and four blocks upwards of the original fire or lava source.

Yes, I know that physics in minecraft are pretty unrealistic, but smoke burning stuff is something small that we can live without.
