This might have been proposed before, but I have an idea for a new mode that I'd call Mob Apocalypse. In the mode you are challenged with higher spawn rate and more health per monster.
In the opening menu, you first choose your difficulty level. The level determines monster and player health levels, mob spawn rate, amount of credits, and various other things like whether or not mobs burn under the sun, or what kind of mobs.
I mentioned credits. Because of the constant onslaught of enemies, no one has time for resource gathering. Instead you are given a certain amount of credits to spend on food and items. You are able to choose from any craftable item, and there are even "house packs" that contain wood and wool or "tech packs" with redstone and so on.
You would also have the option of getting rudimentary tools in the store so you can later risk searching for resources. For instance, if you wanted a diamond sword, buying one would use most of your credits, but buying a mining pack would allow you to get other materials, too.
The scoring system depends on how many monsters you kill, how long you live, and what kind of items you collect. There is a global hi-score leaderboard and possibly co-op.
Finally, there are special modes like One-Hit Player Kill, Creeper Army, Bows Only, etc.
I don't think it would go very well with vanilla Minecraft; even though it would be an optional mode, I don't see the whole idea of credits and whatnot appealing to everyone. Also, the Minecraft people should spend more of their time on other things that they want to add, rather than an optional mode that would take a heck of a lot of programming and not appeal to as many.
I think this would be an awesome custom map or even mod, but for normal Minecraft, I just don't see it.

Yeah, but I certainly don't have the modding skills for it. If there was a mod you'd just have to boost spawn rate, supply some items on player start, and change some health levels.
