Currently all the versions of minecraft maps have two layers, one very thin of dirt and the other of stone going all the way to the core of the planet.
I think it should be kinda like the planet earth, with various layers between the surface and the core.
It would start with the currently rock, then it would become a harder to mine rock that could require a iron pick and it would have better and bigger veins of ores and some diamonds, and finish with the outer core where could have diamonds veins.
It would be extremely pointless to make it similar to that of earth. In real life, the mantle is lava, the outer core is molten metal, and the inner core is solid metal.

The mantles are NOT liquid, but they are immensely hot.
Inner Mantle: the inner mantle can be found between 190 miles (300 km) an 1,800 miles (2,890 km) below the earth’s surface. The average temperature is 5400 ºF (3000ºC), nevertheless the rock is solid because of the high pressures. The inner mantle for the biggest part probably consists of sulphides and oxides of silicon and magnesium. The density is between 4.3g/cm³ and 5.4g/cm³.
Outer Mantle: The outer mantle is a lot thinner than the inner mantle. It can be found between 7 miles (10 km) and 190 miles (300 km) below the surface of the earth. You can divide the outer mantle into two different layers. The bottom layer is tough liquid rock and probably consists of silicates of iron and magnesium. The temperature in this part is between 2520 ºF (1400ºC) and 5400 º F (3000ºC) and the density is between 3.4g/cm³ and 4.3g/cm³. The upper layer of the outer mantle consists of the same material but is stiffer because of its lower temperature.
So you'd only have the crust to work with, still, because everything would be hot enough to kill you instantly.
I'm only pointing this out because your idea has realism in it.
Well, i used planet earth just as an example, they don't need to be exactly the same, and seeing how the player can stay one block above the bottom lava without any problem i say there is no pressure or heat enough to tranform the stone into magma (but still would be fun to have more lava pockets the more deep you get), so please no more discussion about how the real earth works.
Simply put I agree with the people on the lava bit.
Though another reason why I am against this is it takes up alot of space.
Cause right now it may not seem so bad but if you where to make infdev. allot deeper it would really start pushing on you're disk space and memory. As well due to this, it might cause frame rate to suffer terribly.

We are still in the alpha stages on the game so anything can happen still, dont be so quick to toss idea's out because they dont fit right now.
Considering that Notch said that for map sizes a certain amount of disk space would be used.. anything is possible for the way maps are made.
Sadly this cannot be feasibly implemented due to how the lighting code works and the level generation it seems, from what I've heard from notch thoughhh it could be 2x the surface of the earth and 4x deeper?
Well, I quite agree with this.
To all those having fits about realism: He does not actually mean that mine-craft should have strata like the earth. He's basically using an analogy with the large diagram. Harder rock strata is a good way to quantify the mining process. It should have no speed or memory problems, it's just adding a new block type. It doesn't change the amount of data in a level, it just changes the amount of data in the game, the interpreter.

I agree with this idea. I find the notion of mining farther and farther down into the depths of the unknown to be extremely interesting and with different levels of rock this could be very exciting.
I agree with the statements that the last layer (or maybe 2nd last layer) should be Hell.

The more Swiss cheese you have, the more holes you have.
The more holes you have, the less Swiss cheese you have.
Therefore, the more Swiss cheese you have the less Swiss cheese you have.
Yes, just like some already explained i'm not suggesting to make the map deeper, but instead of the rock going all the way to the botom, it would have different layers of materials, getting harder and more rewarding the deeper you go.
About the last layer being hell, does anyone know that the only reason of the maps not being deepers is the lighting issues? If so maybe hell could be always have 100% light in every block with always monsters spawing and no night or day, making no need for light calculations there.
Well, technically, we shouldn't need light calculation down at the lava levels, which there already are, if you just dig straight down. This is because Lava emits so much light that it might as well be un-calculated past a certain point. But this would also serve as a warning zone for when you're close to the lava, getting rid of the shock of removing a block under yourself and falling in.
Seiseki notch's system relies on knowing which block is the top block right now, meaning it has to know how far down each column of blocks stretches, so the deeper you go the more infdev would lag (by how much i don't know, it could be some insignificant amount)
Though i do agree with the idea of layers, even if it does just make different shades of flat stone.

You don't want to go to hell.
Maybe with more constricted caves, if they're put back in with it.
As well as the crust being 30km+ thick.

This how it is currently:
This is how i wish it could be:
With the red layer being lava or hell.
