So as I play Minecraft 1.3 and anticipate the release of 1.4, I can't help but think back to a couple years ago when I started playing the game in mid alpha development. Sure, we've gotten plenty of sweet updates and have an awesome game today; but, what we have now is so different than the Minecraft I fell in love with originally, that it is just about a different game altogether. This is why I propose a new game mode to be added, titled either "Classic" or "Alpha" mode.
This new game type would fall in with the creative and survival modes that we have now, making it an addition to the game that is entirely optional for those who wish to use it. When a world is created in classic mode, a world would simply be generated as it would appear in late alpha or maybe early beta. The same odd geography, the old color palette, the old skins, the minecart booster bugs, everything. I believe it would be a nice throwback for anyone who has been playing minecraft long enough to miss those days and give access to somethings that are different or gone now (rapid fire arrows anyone?). Again, worst case, it is entirely optional, so literally no harm could come from implementing it.
Instead of having to have a game dedicated soley to a very buggy alpha, you could simply choose to play a polished version with (game-breaking) bugs fixed, already in your current Minecraft game
There is no point in wasting valuable coding time on a gamemode that removes features.

Edit: Just in case I wasn't clear, the harm that would come from it would be loss of coding time that could be used for much more useful and practical additions, such as a lighting update.
hmm. I can't say much cause I started playing when 1.7.3 came out, so I didn't get to see much of the old stuff. but yup, there are mods for minecraft old-timers

If anyone wants to port/remake this, feel free to do that! Or don't. It's up to you, really.
sorry; I use, way too much, 'punctuation', it's a habit...
