Spawing randomly in certain biomes above ground you would see a ring of tombstones with a larger stone in the center. Basically, a graveyard with a tomb or barrow in the center of it. Underneath the larger stone (underground) would be a chamber no larger than the size of a 'dungeon' and containing some loot chests. The tomb would spawn wights. Wights would be a translucent mob which would appear only within the tomb during daylight but could spawn above ground at night. They would attack their victim inflicting slowness, weakness, and minor damage with their touch. Also, they could travel through walls like ghosts to reach their victims. A player would beware to build their home anywhere near a barrow as the wights can spawn after dark and wander close to their house potentially spotting them and passing through their walls. Wights would burn up in sunlight like zombies and skeletons.
A wight might would look like the player but silvery and translucent and appearing to wear armor. Maybe they could make a scarier model.
The stone circle could be made of mossy brick or cobble arranged in cross-like formations with a sort of monument in the center.
I thought it might fit in with the theme of the 'very scary update'. Ghosts or wights in general seem like they might fit in with the theme of minecraft.. especially if the ghosts appear to be disembodied spirits of mighty players long dead....
Which reminds me of something else...
Remember "The Sims"? Man, one of my favorite things to do was to build a big house, put a bunch of Sims in it, and then have them all killed off. Everytime a 'Sim' dies there's a tombstone placed somewhere on the property. Then I would move some unexpecting family into the house (having moved all the tombstones into a convenient graveyard out back) and watch as they were tormented by the ghosts of the dead 'Sims'. What made this even more fun was to skin your original batch of 'Sims' (the dead ones) with really freaky skins like devils and strange creatures and such, as their ghost would still have the original skins. Gwah hahaha!

I saw barrows, and the first thing that came to mind was the Barrows Brothers from RuneScape. Anyway the idea sounds good, it adds to the adventure-ish theme to Minecraft.
Graveyards:

Curse PremiumLike when you walk up to the biome the sky starts to get darker(not like sunset) That would be a perfect place for your graveyard to spawn
