I was playing the the /xp command so I got up to where it wouldn't go any higher (lvl 2689 or something) and so I died and guess how much xp I got? 5 lvls back. They seriously need to fix this.

In all fairness, in any game where you lose xp when you die, you lose substantially more when your are at a higher level. While I do find it strange that you lost so much, I'm pretty sure that all but the best PCs (like my beast) would surely lag out at the shear amount of EXP orbs flying around. As for there being a set percentage of EXP loss, I don't remember ever seeing anything about it, thus I can only assume it's random.
Ok, its not broken. Here is how it works:
When you die, the game counts how many levels you have. Takes that number, multiply's it by 2, then gives you that much Xp back. That way, if you die, it drastically reduces the amount of Xp given.
If you die with 30 levels, it gives you 60Xp.
And NO SUPPORT, The Xp system is there so users don't kill them selfs in order to regain Health. Also, it provides benefits to staying alive.
[Edit] just rechecked the Wiki, its multiplied by 7, not 2. My bad

I have no idea if that is actually how it works, want to see a source on that. But I'm not seeing the problem here. You have a lot of XP, die, and lose most of it. Where is the problem?
Pxex has an actual problem where dying gave him extra levels. I thought they fixed that.

When the player dies, they drop 7 times their level as experience orbs, up to a maximum of 100 points (enough to reach level 6). All the other experience vanishes.
As for why this is:

Just because you don't understand how something works, doesn't make it broken or pointless. >_<
2) This is both to stop you from getting all your xp back when you die (there has to be a down side to dying) and to stop people on multiplayer servers from getting an ungodly amount of xp every time they kill somebody.
The cap for the amount of levels you get back after you die is around 5.
So, it's not broken, it's not pointless, it's how the game is.
And how most games are.

Well they inserted the command so they were expecting this.
Support. So annoying to lose 30 levels and only get 3 back. Good thing I have an xp farm.
