I read that they are making it so that you can dye pet wolves' collars, which Iiiiiii guess is PRETTY nice and all, but am I the only who wishes that wolves were more like pets? I mean, sure, a mod could accomplish this, and there WAS a mod called DoggyTalents, which basically made it where wolves could have different skills and special things about them, as well as give the ability to give more commands, and a craftable chew toy which lets you play fetch with it. Thing is, that mod has not, and most likely will not be updated, and no one else is jumping on making more pet-like wolves.
I kind of feel like tamed wolves are just that: TAMED wolves. Not PET wolves, TAMED wolves. Maybe that was the only intention, but I can't help but to feel like tamed wolves are just fleshy, organic and cute attack drones that you hire by throwing them a bone and repair by feeding them meat.
What if they made it so that you could give one or two more commands to your wolves, and maybe cats. Maybe add a chew toy or make it so that you can throw a stick that is made into a fetching stick to make your pet wolf chase it, pick it up and give it back to you? I would also suggest adding hunger, but it doesn't seem right to add this feature to wolves but not cats, and I don't think people want to have to go feed every cat that's at their creeper-watching posts every few day cycles.
Also, what about special doors that only cats and dogs could pass through? Though I guess you could just use a hole the size of one block, though that still leaves the issue of cave spiders.
But now this is just turning into suggestions. I had in mind a few other things, but I can't think of them. Just, you know. In short, I think it would be better if pet wolves were a bit more dynamic and had ways you could play with them.
I don't really have complaints about cats because I don't often have a cat, and the one time I did, it actually felt like a damn pet. Most people find having a cat climb on top of things annoying, but I kind of like having my cat try to jump onto and sit on posts and furnaces and climb into beds when I sleep in them and how it one time randomly ran around my living room. I even kind of like how they sometimes randomly chase down and kill a chicken or two. It actually feels like a cat.
How do some of you people feel about wolves right now?
Honestly? I'm not a big fan of pets. In the very first update when wolves were added, I ran out and got myself a pet (tamed, whatever) wolf. Then it tried to push me off a cliff, so I took it to my room, made it sit, and left it there for months on end. I have not had a pet wolf since.
When ocelots/cats were first added, I went fishing, got myself a good supply of raw fish, sailed for two days to find a jungle, and then waited around until I found an ocelot. After some trial and error, I finally tamed it! Hooray! So I took it back to my house, which was on a small island offshore, and had it sit down there. Then I went back to explore the jungle some more, and when I got back home the cat was gone. I never saw it again, and I never tried to tame another ocelot.
So, yeah, not too keen on taming animals. Now, if I could tame a creeper...
To answer the OP's question, honestly I'm not too excited about pets. I want to be, but too many issues that makes keeping them alive a constant concern and thus a hassle. If they fixed the teleporting bugs, maybe made the AI a little more cautious around drop offs/lava/water and made them walk as quickly as the player I would be more interested in having pets.
I thought they fixed the issue with them pushing you off cliffs. Heh. This kind of reminds me of how one of the splash textes in the menu in the BTW mod says "Notch, wolves were a BAD idea!"
Ah, well. Maybe they'll make major changes or some overhaul to wolves and ocelots/cats in the future that gives them a better AI and more features.
That's almost exactly what I was thinking. I also just noticed a wolf suggestion megathread, though I didn't see it anywhere until I found someone making a similar suggestion as me and got flambe'd for it before they redirected him to the megathread, though it's slightly old.
I think that either, people haven't suggested a whole lot for wolves, Mojang currently have no interest nor any intent to make tamed animals more pet-like, or they are currently focused on more important things since Minecraft isn't really a pet-focused game anyways.
I use my wolves, but only after I have left 2 of them at home to repopulate, for me wolves are my soldiers, and I'm pretty good at using them too. I just think that there need to be more features rather than just make them sit or follow you. I think there needs to be a certain spot that they can leave to defend you from, but will go back to that same spot once they are done, which will then slowly heal them over time. so that way I could make little 4x4x6 rooms to keep a few wolves in with a 1 block wide door that they rush out of to defend me from.
I've tried using wolves, but they are just so annoying that I can't stand being near them. Besides, I thought they were really only intended to be tamed wolves for combat, not pets.

Well by chew toy, it's not like it has to be an actual chew toy, but maybe just a bone.
Anyways, from the way I see it, most people only wanted wolves and cats for killing more mobs and getting more resources anyways but hate them because they're annoying, near useless and suck at their jobs, am I right?
In that case, to hell with them. Why not remove them?

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
