Since there seems to be no other threads on how to make combat better in the game, I'll start one.
Well, first off, I believe that they should redo the combat system a little bit. Don't you hate being ninja-blowed up by a creeper? So do I. It isn't fun really, if ANY enemy does it. I believe that they should make it to where it would let you know if there is an enemy nearby and should tell you how many there are. Such as playing a sound or somehow make the enemy(s) stand out. However, given a small enough amount of space this sound/notification wouldn't play.
(Ex: You're mining in a cave and you hear enemies on the other side of the wall BUT you don't know where they are since neither the sound or ping will happen.)
What does this example mean? Good question. It means that this little addition to the game shouldn't be a cheat that lets you see where a mob spawner/another cave is. I would like to know if this is a good idea or not so leave a reply

Anyways, I also believe they should make a way for you to lock yourself in combat with a certain enemy, like maybe using a sword, but this wouldn't work on creepers since they explode . If you are locked in combat with one enemy, you take reduced damage from all other enemies near you (except creepers) and maybe to balance this out, you should take increased damage from the mob you're locked in combat with. BUT that's only if there are MULTIPLE mobs within a certain radius of your player. This idea just sounds interesting to me so I thought that I should share it with you guys.
As Hollow said, they make footsteps. Either way, mobs aren't very threatening anyway, but it's the combat system that needs the most improvement. After that, mobs need to be harder so that skill is a factor in fights.
