I think it should only be craftable at a workbench though, or one would mine way longer than normal before their inventory is full. (Seeing you could craft it on the spot and it would take less inventory space)
Secondly, if we would make this virtually indestructible I'd say you'd need to use normal stone, so before that you used coal and cobblestone. You know, more effort for a good block.
If you wouldn't, no one would ever use the furnace to make stones again.
What Lucifer said does not take away the problem that you wouldn't need to use a workbench, which IMO is imperative to add to the process.
I'm also not sure about the 2x2 = 2 thing, I know it's a "stronger" brick, but the density of the stone wouldn't decrease, so losing 2 whole stones is awkward and not handy. I'd say lose one and have 3. Heck perhaps we should do it like cobblestone that turns into steps. 3x1 Stone = 2 Masonry stones. I think that'd work best, but that's just me.
@Alpha_Squad, I don't think he'll remove the red bricks texture, it's a nice addition to a lot of houses in creative, but masonry bricks would surely be added to it.
@Terra, you do realist how much you'd need to mine out before you could have a simple building standing, right?
I mean I support the idea when you think of it IRL (yeah yeah, I know you guys don't enjoy those comparisons), these 'stones' wouldn't be very square but all raffled up and uneven, in the workshop you'd make neat straight bricks out of them making them stronger, 6 to 2 would be not only realistic but also worth it.
However gameplay wise I'd think it'd be too much effort for so little bricks, though eventually... I guess it all depends on how strong they are.
@Menen, I don't think those bricks will disappear at all. So don't worry about losing those looks. =D
The only thing hard to obtain is coal, but I keep reminding myself to infdev not having regenerating trees, but that has long been fixed so coal isn't necessary. ^^
Either way, 2x3 for 2 is I think THE best option.

/infdev/ has regenerating trees? When did this happen. Speaking of /infdev/, Masonry sounds like it would work a lot better with infinite maps, since you are not limited of materials. Ever.
I find coal frequently by digging into stone mountains until I find a vein or two. Often you may find veins of coal sticking out of cliff sides as TerraSleet said.
I think they have, I saw some trees regenerate before the last update, not sure when exactly.
I do know however that they don't grow underground anymore, =[
I've had a tree underground with PLENTY of room and it didn't grow not even after a ingame week.
And I completely agree, even though in theory there is limited rock, you'll never ever run out. ^^
I also think I post too much in this topic, but amazing ideas tend to be interesting. o_o
Coal is not easily findable in large quantities though, unlike wood, which you can grow.
Coal isn't hard to obtain. Just work your way up to a stone pickaxe (get a wooden pickaxe, then dig stone, or just make a creeper explode into a cliff edge for stone). After that just find an exposed cliff, there's usually a coal vein exposed and you can just dig that out for some easy fuel and torches.
Actually a wodden pickaxe will extract coal as well.

I like the 3 to 2 the best. I'd prefer something like a 5 to 4 but that would have a really odd schematic and if these bricks are a good deal stronger it would be unbalanced. I also stole the masonry brick texture and replaced cobblestone with it, looks so much nicer! (Though I miss cobblestone for the roads).
For some reason, I'm in love with that texture, and the idea in general.
It's so simple, but it's so god damn awesome.
And as for being expensive, that didn't stop the czars Peter the Great/Giant or Cathrine the Great
from making and expanding St.Petersburg did it?

But I think cobblestone looks good with wood. :C

...I just got ninja'd 2 times, lol.

I prefer iron tools since they get the job done.
True, true.
