Faries are a rare forest mob that may spawn in groups of at most 3, but are more than likely to be encountered individually. When killed, they drop 50 expirience, and have a small chance of dropping glowstone dust. They will not spawn if the light level is lower than 8 (unless exposed to direct moon light), below sea level (y <= 62), outside of forest biomes, or under opaque blocks.
Faries, although a passive mob, will behave much like ocelots. That is, unless you are moving very slowly, they will try to avoid you. They are very small, thus hard to hit, and can move exceptionally fast. It is best to attack from a distance with a well aimed arrow.
It can be very difficult to trap a fairy, or make a fairy farm, as they can fly, and will not spawn under opaque blocks. Likewise, because of their small size, they can fit through 1X1 holes in walls and ceilings.
Fairies will appear fully bright in any light level, similar to blazes. This makes them easy to spot, especially at night.
If they were really small (like little balls of light ish) and uselessly flew around like bats but above forests/jungles/taigas, and they dropped 10xp and 0-1 glowstone dust then yes that would be awesome.
I don't know about this. I personally don't see exactly what they have to offer the game, although I do like the idea of them dropping glowstone dust, since this is a good way to receive glowstone without obsidian and diamond.
Bats have no uses, but they add alot to the hole cave experience when you see them.

Hole cave? A pun? I think so. And yes, bats do have no purpose, but they probably will in the future. The OP needs to add more details to say how his idea could develop throughout time. I'm sure Mojang know how bats will develop, and have more purpose, through the game.

Faries drop 50 expirience, enough to get you to level 3 from level 0. Likewise, this is a suggestion, feel free to add anything to it that may be of interest, like them dropping fairy wings or stuff like that.
Maybe you could make it where you can catch them in a bottle and have them heal you when you release them give you a second chance if you die while it's in your inventory, like in Legend of Zelda.
Or maybe have them create rings of mushrooms that are really portals to Underhill, the fairies' domain. You could find enchanted armor, weapons or tools there (made out of materials other than iron since fey races don't like iron), and maybe Mooshrooms and giant glowing mushrooms that drop random food items when their blocks are broken--red and brown mushrooms being most common, but also including raw beef, raw chicken, raw porkchops, rotten flesh, cake, bread, pumpkin pie, etc.
Maybe have them become hostile toward you if you set fire in their forest?
