Problem: Meat is so plentiful there is no gameplay benefit to produce other foods. Meat is also easier to collect than to farm lower density plants.
Even in a case where there is no meat avalable, the player only need to grow one food type, and there is no benefit to growing other types.
Solution: Vitamins! Eating a food gives the player a vitamin(s). The least dense and most difficult-to-produce foods tend to have the largest number and amount of vitatmins. Combinations of vitamins present in the player will apply a buff to an attribute or ability. The buff gradually improves as long as the component vitamins are present, maxing out at about 5 days (good nutrition has a mild long term benefit, as opposed to the bigger short term benefit of potions).
Vitamin levels deplete slowly with time, and if the required vitamin(s) are no longer present, the buff will slowly degrade back to nothing. One food will tend to give you enough of a vitamin to last a day or two. Max vitamin reserves are about 3 days. Nutrition and malnutrition are long-term effects that encourage a long-term avalability of many foods, and will be relatively easy for the player to maintain if they have a small farm plot.

It seems overly complicated just to make people eat more of other types of food. Besides, I typically eat Bread, Watermelon, and in some cases Stew. I rarely go after meat, even though I have a large farm of meat producing animals at my disposal.

Actually, I eat things besides meat because they are easier to manage and grow at about an exponential rate. You may start off with a few seeds but each time you harvest you get enough to replant and some to store or expand with. Once I get a modest sized field I have more than enough food to last me, whereas with animals I have to breed each animal twice before killing them, just to keep the herd the same size. Not to mention the fact that it requires Wheat to breed them. I just find it easier to manage.

You could save yourself a lotta clicks by just eating beef instead of melons, and save time by just slaughtering them on the countryside.

Vitamins would make the game harder, because you would have to check your vitamines, and get different foods, etc.
Not a bad Idea, but if you can simplify it, it would be great.
Bye.
