What if in abandoned mine shafts, a spider egg sack block spawned? It would spawn in corners near chests and resemble a dense cobweb.
It would break instantly if you stepped on it or hit with a tool and spawn a whole mess of baby spiders; 25% the size of regular spiders, but faster moving. They would have low hp and wouldn't do much damage individually but there would be a whole mess of them posing a decent threat.
And the only way to safely destroy the egg sack without getting mobbed by babies would be to burn it with either a flint/tinder or lava.
And for the record I spent the last fifteen minutes looking through the forums and did not come across a similar idea. If it's already been suggested and I missed it in my search I do apologize.
Huh, I really like it. Perhaps it could look a lot like cobweb so that you might accidentally break it.
EDIT: To deter people from using texture packs to avoid this, it could actually use the cobweb texture as a base and add in a small egg texture in the very center, kind of like how the beacon block uses the obsidian texture for the bottom, but the beacon texture for the majority of it.
Actually I was just gonna revise that to 5-7 per sack (my original idea was like a dozen each killed in one hit, which might be a little much). And the idea of causing the other sacks to break I really like, hadn't even thought of that. And I definitely like the idea of using the cobweb texture as a base.
Glad to see we're on the same page lol.
Something else I was thinking, would it be feasible to have the cave spiders themselves spawn the block? Maybe so they spawn naturally around chests but there's a slight chance of finding them elsewhere in caves?
Absolutely love this idea. But if they could be "triggered"(for lack of a better word) by cave spiders, then what would they do? Attack the spider? Because that doesn't seem quite rational to me. However, if they just wandered around, they might despawn. Also, would they turn into normal(or cave) adult spiders or what? Just wondering.

Ahhhh, my mistake. I meant would it be feasible to have cave spiders leave egg sacks lying around. As in they'll automatically spawn around chests, but there would be a chance of a cave spider that's just in the mine shaft to "lay" one of these sacks elsewhere Having spiders "trigger" these blocks wouldn't really make sense. I was thinking only players triggering them, but it could make things interesting if other mobs (besides spiders) triggered them. Could be cool to turn a corner in a mineshaft and watch a zombie getting nommed to death by a bunch of spiderlings.
